The government's decision to decrease the number of new teachers for the upcoming year has sparked a backlash from educational groups.

The Ministry of Education recently announced its plans for next year's teacher recruitment. The plan entails hiring a total of 8,939 new teachers, including 297 for kindergartens, 3,108 for elementary schools, 3,907 for middle schools, and 75 librarians.

This marks a reduction from the previous year, with 453 fewer elementary, 991 fewer middle school, and 125 fewer kindergarten teachers being hired.

Consequently, new teacher appointments in the Jeju region will decrease by 116 compared to this year.

In response, the Jeju branch of the National Association of Educational Workers stated that three new schools are being established in Jeju. To ensure a high-quality education, they stressed the need for a stable teacher workforce and called for an increase in the number of appointments.

교원단체가 반발하고 나섰습니다.

교육부는 최근 사전 예고를 통해
내년 유치원 교사 297명, 초등 3천 108명, 중등 3천 907명,
사서 75명 등 모두 8천 939명의 신규 채용 계획을 발표했습니다.

이는 지난해보다 초등은 453명이 줄었고
중등은 991명, 유치원은 125명이 감소한 규모입니다.

이에 따라 제주지역 선발 인원도
올해와 비교해 116명이 감소했습니다.

전국교직원노동조합 제주지부는 성명을 통해
제주에는 3개의 학교가 신설을 추진 중이고
질 높은 교육을 보장하기 위해서는
안정적인 교사 정원 확보가 필요하다며
선발 인원 확대를 요구했습니다.
