Shinhwa World - Costco Forge Partnership


Jeju Shinhwa World has been working to secure its customer base and expand its infrastructure.

Ramjeong Jeju Development, the operator of Jeju Shinhwa World, has recently signed a basic agreement with Costco Korea to collaborate on a business venture.


Costco Korea is planning to open its doors in the first half of 2026. They are currently going through the necessary procedures, such as obtaining construction permits and registering the large-scale store.


Ramjeong Jeju Development plans to select Costco Korea as the operator of its Jeju development project once Costco Korea has obtained the necessary approvals and met the development requirements.


Contrary to speculation that the land would be sold, Ramjeong will lease it to Costco Korea, who will be in charge of operating the store.


However, local businesses are likely to oppose the establishment of a large retailer now that the plan has been officially proposed.

We don't think local agricultural products can be included in Costco's supply chain. Even if they are included, there are still serious concerns about fair pricing, sales, consumption, or having a sustainable cycle of production.



Ramjeong and the JDC, the operator of Jeju Shinhwa World development, say they will prioritize local cooperation with Costco Korea. They plan to establish a channel for Jeju's agricultural and livestock products, as well as prioritize the employment of local residents.

Costco's opening will transform Jeju's distribution system and make affordable goods available. Local cooperation strategies will be developed until the large-scale store is registered.


While islanders may be enthusiastic about a broader range of products and reduced prices, local businesses are worried about the potential impact a retail giant could have on their bottom lines.

고객 확보와 인프라 확충을 위해
대형마트 입점을 추진해온 제주신화월드.

결국 제주신화월드 운영사인 람정제주개발은
최근 코스트코 코리아를 예비사업자로 선정하고
사업 추진을 위한 기본 협약을 체결했습니다.

코스트코 코리아는
오는 2026년 상반기 개점을 목표로
건축허가와 대규모 점포 등록 등 관련 절차를 밟을 계획입니다.

람정제주개발은
코스트코 코리아가 관련 인허가를 마치는 등
개발 요건을 모두 갖추면 최종사업자로 선정할 예정입니다.

일각에서 토지 매각 가능성도 점쳐졌으나
람정은 부지를 빌려주고
코스트코 코리아가 마트 운영을 전담하게 됩니다.

다만 대형마트 입점 추진이 공식화되면서
지역상권의 반발은 더욱 거세질 전망입니다.
