Chinese Son Abandoned on Jeju
Early in the morning, a child wanders around the park, searching for someone.
As time passes, the child becomes increasingly anxious, quickening his pace.
After searching for tens of minutes, the child seems to give up and stands still, gazing at the sky.
A public worker at the park maintenance finds the child, comforts him, and shortly thereafter, the police arrive, taking the child along with his belongings.
This 9-year-old child, of Chinese nationality, was searching for the father who had been with them in the park.
However, that same morning, the father disappeared after leaving the child alone on the park ground.

One of our workers noticed the child crying and wandering around when he came to work. He seemed distraught, so we reported it to the police.
Last month on the 14th, the Chinese father and son arrived in Jeju with a tourist visa. When they ran out of funds for their stay, they resorted to a nomadic lifestyle, living in this park area for about five days.
Even locals noticed them placing bags and blankets in one part of the park and staying there for several days. However, no one suspected that a child abandonment crime was taking place.

I didn't know them, but I was worried about why they weren't taking their bags with them. Later, I found out that they were a father and a son, and the father left the child alone, so the police had to come. I didn’t expect abandonment.
The day after the crime, the child's father, a 37-year-old Chinese man named A, was arrested by the police for charges of neglect and abandonment.
It was revealed that he had come to Jeju with the intention of abandoning the child in Korea, which he believed had a better environment than China.
In the bag confiscated by the police, an English letter written by the father was found, stating that he no longer wanted the child to live a homeless life together.
The letter expressed the hope that the child would be adopted by a Korean institution or a private home, receive a good education, and grow up well.
The police have arrested the Chinese father, Mr. A, on charges of neglect and abandonment and have transferred him to the prosecution.

It was confirmed that the father implied and expressed to the child before coming to Jeju that they would go to Korea for a better environment because life in China was difficult. Although he regrets his actions, he insists that, even in a similar situation, he would send the child to a better environment.+
Despite claiming it was for the child's sake, the Chinese father committed a crime that should never have been done.
He will now face trial in Korea, while the child has ultimately been returned to relatives in China.
'한국에서 잘 살길'…아들 버린 中 아버지 '구속'
이른 아침, 한 아이가 공원을 돌아다니며 누군가를 찾습니다.
시간이 흐를 수록 아이는 초조해하고 발걸음도 빨라집니다.
수십분 동안 해메다 체념한 듯 아이는
가만히 서서 하늘만 올려다 봅니다.
공원 관리 담당 공무원이 아이를 발견해 안심 시키고
잠시 뒤 출동한 경찰이
짐과 이불 등을 챙겨 아이를 데려갑니다.
9살, 중국 국적의 이 아이는
공원에 함께 있던 아버지를 찾고 있었습니다.
하지만 아버지는 당일 새벽,
공원 바닥에 자고 있는
아이를 홀로 두고 사라진 뒤였습니다.

직원이 공원팀인데 출근하면서 지나가는 길에 아이가 혼자 울면서
왔다 갔다 하고 어수선해 보이니까 경찰에 신고하고 사무실 쪽으로 연락해서 알게 됐습니다.
지난 달 14일, 무사증으로 제주에 온 중국인 부자는
체류 경비가 떨어지자
떠돌이 생활을 했고
이 공원 일대에서
5일 가량 노숙을 한 것으로 전해졌습니다.
주변에서도 이들이
공원 한쪽에 짐과 이불을 놓고
며칠동안 지내는 걸 봤지만
유기 범죄가 발생할 거라곤 전혀 의심하지 못했습니다.

"저 사람들 왜 누군인지 몰라도 왜 가방을 안 가져가나 좀 걱정했거든요. 나중에 보니 두 부자가 있더라고.. 또 아이만 놔두고 갔다고 해서 경찰이 와서야 알았거든요. 전 몰랐어요."
범행 이튿날 경찰에 잡힌 아이 아버지 37살 중국인 A 씨는
중국보다
더 좋은 환경인 한국에 아이를 유기하려는 목적으로
제주에 왔다며 혐의를 인정한 것으로 알려졌습니다.
경찰이 수거한 가방에서 아버지가 쓴 영문 편지도 발견됐는데
"아이가 더 이상 노숙 생활을 함께하길 바라지 않는다며.
한국의 기관이나 개인 가정에 입양돼
좋은 교육을 받고 자라기를 바란다" 내용이 적혀 있었습니다.
경찰은 중국인 아버지 A 씨를
방임과 유기 혐의로 구속해 검찰에 송치했습니다.

해서는 안될 범죄를 저지른 중국인 아버지는
한국에서 재판을 받게 됐고
아이는 결국 중국에 있는 친척에게 돌려보내졌습니다.
