Unpaid Wages Reach 14.5 Billion Won


For two months now, Mr. A in his 40s hasn't received his monthly salary.

He urgently took out a loan and used it for housing and living expenses.

He continuously requested his company for his salary, but eventually had to turn to the office of the Ministry of Employment and Labor.

Delinquent wage reporter
I had no choice but to take out a loan even for my rent. I feel like I shouldn't annoy my employer for no reason. But it's not some kind of favor, I’m asking to get my own money.

The Ministry of Employment and Labor, which supports delinquent wage reporters, continues to receive counseling inquiries.

Everyone is complaining about the injustice of not receiving their wages on time.

As of the end of last month, the amount of delinquent wages in Jeju is 14.52 billion won.
Compared to the same period last year, it has surged by 48.9 percent.
When looking at it by industry, construction had the highest percentage at 34.4 percent, followed by food and accommodation at 13.9 percent and service at 13.7 percent.


This year, with the economy stagnating across the industry sectors, the problem of delinquent wages is particularly severe.

The province is working with relevant agencies to resolve as many cases of delinquent wages as possible before Chuseok.

The provincial office also plans to actively promote government support programs such as delinquent wage livelihood loans and free legal assistance.

For government-contracted projects, we will make every effort to disburse advance and progress payments before Chuseok, and we will strengthen supervision to ensure that wage delinquency does not occur for projects ordered by the provincial office.

As the Chuseok holiday approaches, the plight of workers who haven't received their delayed wages is becoming even more pronounced.



못 받은 돈 145억 원…체불임금 '급증'


두 달째 밀린 월급을 받지 못한 40대 A씨.

급한 대로 대출을 받아 집값과 생활비로 사용했습니다.

회사에 지속적으로 월급 지급을 요청했지만
결국 노동청에 올 수 밖에 없었습니다.

월세도 어쩔 수 없이 대출 받아서 내고
제가 제 돈을 받으려고 얘기하는 거잖아요.
그런데 저는 그 사람(고용주)한테 괜히 굽신거려야 하고
돈 주세요, 제가 무슨 거지도 아닌데...


체불 임금 신고자들을 지원하는
노동청에는 계속해서
상담 문의가 이어지고 있습니다.

모두가 제때 임금을 받지 못해 억울함을 호소합니다.



지난달 말 기준
제주지역 체불 금액은 145억2천9백만 원.

지난해 같은 기간
97억 원과 비교하면 48.9%나 급증했습니다.

업종별로 살펴보면
건설업이 34.4%로 가장 많았고
음식숙박업 13.9%
서비스업 13.7% 순이었습니다.

올해는 특정 분야할 것 없이
전반적으로 경기가 침체되면서
유독 체불 임금 사태가 심각한 것으로 파악됐습니다.

제주도는
추석 전까지 가능한 많은 체불 임금 사례가
해소될 수 있도록
유관기관과 협력하고 있습니다.

또 체불 임금 생계비 융자 제도와
무료 법률 지원 같은
정부 지원 제도를 적극 홍보할 계획입니다.

관급공사에 대해서는 선급금과 기성금 등 추석전에 최대한 집행하고
도가 발주한 관급 공사만큼은 임금 체불이 발생하지 않도록 지도 점검을 강화하겠습니다.

밀린 임금을 받지 못한
노동자들의 시름은 더욱 커지고 있습니다.
