Green Persimmons See Sharp Decline


This is the (갈옷) galot attire that Jeju islanders wore in the past.

Made from green persimmon juice soaked in water and dried repeatedly under the sun, it was once the everyday clothing of Jeju residents.


Furthermore, its design has evolved to a more contemporary style, with various colors like indigo being added, transforming galot into a fashionable everyday garment.

The design is beautiful, and the colors are very pretty.

While seeking to meet consumer preferences by making galot attire more modern, galot manufacturers are currently facing a crisis due to climate change.

Obtaining the main dye, green persimmon, has become as difficult as finding stars in the sky.

With Jeju's indigenous persimmon production plummeting to just 10 percent of previous years, even with significantly higher prices, it has become nearly impossible to purchase.

There is usually a chance of some flowers and fruit falling during the monsoon season. However, this year, everything just fell off, the weather was strange.

Some speculate that the drastic decline in green persimmon production may be attributed to factors related to climate change, such as the possible decline of bee colonies, which could disrupt proper pollination.

However, the exact causes remain unclear.


As a result, in related industries, there is currently an adequate reserve of green persimmon, ensuring no immediate disruption in galot production.

Nevertheless, concerns linger that if the current production levels do not recover to previous volume, it could have a considerable impact on Jeju's galot attire production.

소비자들의 눈높이에 맞춰 갈옷들이 새롭게 변하를 모색하는 가운데
최근 갈옷 제작업체들이 기후 변화에 울상을 짓고 있습니다.

감물을 들이는
주 염료인 풋감을 구하기가
하늘의 별따기만큼 어려워졌기 때문입니다.

제주 토종 감 열매 생산량이
예년의 10분의 1수준으로 급감하면서
수매 가격을
갑절 가까이 불러도 구하기가 어려운 현실입니다.

꽃이 맺히고 열매가 장마 때 조금 떨어지는 확률은 있어요. 그런데 올해는 그냥 몽땅 떨어져서 날씨가 그래서 이상하게 감이 조금씩 이렇게 자란 것도 그냥 다 떨어져서...


일각에선 풋감 생산량 급감이
꿀벌의 집단 폐사로
수분이 제대로 이뤄지지 않는 등
기후 변화 요인으로 추정하고 있지만
정확한 원인은 규명되지 않고 있습니다.

이 때문에 관련 업계에선
다행히 감물 비축량이 있어 당장의 갈옷 생산에는 차질이 없지만
지금의 생산량이
예년 수준을 되찾지 못할 경우
제주 갈옷 생산에
적잖은 영향을 줄 수 있다고 우려하고 있습니다.
