Relay Stone Wall Building Project


A cool autumn breeze wafts through the buckwheat fields in (와흘) Waheul.

Tourists stroll along the knee-high Jeju stone wall path that meanders through the buckwheat fields.

The picturesque blend of lush buckwheat fields and stone walls has turned every corner into a photo-worthy spot.

I came out with my family to walk along the stone wall path. It's enjoyable because you can admire the buckwheat flowers.

This is the newly established Jeju Millennium Stone Wall Path created by the National Credit Union Federation of Korea through a relay stone wall building project.


In support of Jeju's stone walls inclusion in the UNESCO World Agricultural Heritage list and to raise awareness of their value, 1,000 employees participated in the relay project over 6 months to construct 1 kilometer of stone walls.

Despite appearing somewhat irregularly constructed, the name of the village, 'Waheul,' stands out vividly when viewed from the sky.

Seeing it now, it looks really impressive. I firmly believe this will become a prominent tourist attraction in Jeju. Therefore, we are actively engaging and providing more support for this stone wall building project.

Typically, about 80,000 people visit our village each year. With the support of the company in creating this stone wall path, we anticipate a significant positive impact on our tourism assets in the future.

Particularly, by building stone walls using Jeju's traditional methods and leveraging existing tourist resources in the village, they have added significant meaning to this project.

Jeju stone walls are abundant, and because of their ubiquity, their value is often overlooked. The existing stone walls are rapidly deteriorating, and there's limited space for new construction. Preserving this precious heritage is of paramount importance.


Constructed with the aspiration to endure in the same location even after a thousand years, the Jeju Millennium Stone Wall Path is safeguarding Jeju's traditional culture.

The collaboration between the village and businesses is fostering the local economy, transforming Jeju's stone walls into cultural and tourist assets.





릴레이 쌓기 프로젝트 '제주천년돌담길'


선선한 가을 바람이 불어오는 와흘 메밀밭.

관광객들이
메밀밭 사이 나즈막한 무릎 높이의
제주 돌담길을 걷습니다.

흐드러진 메밀밭과 돌담이 어우러진 풍경에
곳곳이 포토존이 됐습니다.

가족들하고 같이 나와서 돌담길을 걸어보니까 메밀꽃도 좋아 보이고 사람들하고도 볼 게 많아서 재밌는 것 같아요.

신협이 릴레이 돌담쌓기 프로젝트로
새롭게 조성한 제주천년돌담길입니다.


제주돌담의 유네스코 세계농업유산 등재를 후원하고
돌담의 가치를 알리기 위해
임직원 1천 명이 6개월 동안 릴레이로 1km의 돌담을 쌓았습니다.

구불구불 마구잡이로 쌓여진 듯 하지만
하늘에서 바라본 모습은
와흘이라는 마을 명칭이 선명하게 드러납니다.

지금 와서 보니까 너무 좋은 것 같아요.
이게 지금 제주의 관광 명소가 될 것이라고 믿어 의심치 않습니다. 그래서 앞으로 이 돌담 쌓기에 신협이 적극적으로 더 동참하고 후원을 많이 하도록 하겠습니다.

보통 1년에 (마을에) 8만 명 정도가 방문하고 있습니다.
그래서 우리 마을에서는 신협에서 이런 돌담길을 다시 만들어주고 하니까 앞으로 관광자원으로 엄청나게 효과가 있을 것으로 기대됩니다.


특히 제주의 전통방식으로
돌담을 쌓고 마을의 기존 관광자원을 활용하면서
그 의미를 더했습니다.

제주 돌담은 너무나 흔합니다.
흔하다 보니까 우리가 그 가치를 놓치고 있을 때가 많습니다.
지금 밭담은 급격히 허물어지는데 신규로 쌓는 공간도 없습니다.
우리는 이 소중한 가치를 지켜가는 것이 대단히 중요합니다.

1천년 후에도
같은 자리에 남아있길 바란다는 염원을 담아 쌓은 제주천년돌담길.

제주의 전통문화를 계승하고
지역 경제 활성화를 위한 마을과 기업의 협업이
제주 밭담을 보존하고
문화 관광 자원으로 발전시켜나가고 있습니다.
