The number of stray dogs captured and rescued has declined while pet registrations have significantly increased over the past decade.

According to Jeju City, animal registration cases have surged from about 1,500 in 2013 to over 48,000 this year.

Conversely, the number of stray dogs captured or rescued has decreased, with figures showing a decline from 4,000 in 2018 to 2,600 last year.

Jeju city attributes this positive trend to growing social concern for animal welfare, amendments to the Animal Protection Law, and the expansion of animal welfare programs.



반려동물 급증…유기견 포획·구조 건수 감소


최근 10년간 반려동물 등록은 크게 늘었지만 유기견 포획, 구조 건수는 줄어든 것으로 나타났습니다.

제주시에 따르면 동물등록 건수는 지난 2013년 1천 500여 마리에서 올해 4만 8천여 마리로 급증했습니다. 반면 유기견 포획이나 구조건수는 2018년 4천여 마리에서 지난해 2천 600여 마리로 감소세를 보이고 있는 것으로 조사됐습니다.

제주시는 동물복지에 대한 사회적 관심이 높아짐에 따라 동물보호법이 개정되고 동물복지 사업이 확대되면서 선순환이 이뤄지고 있는 것으로 분석했습니다.
