The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries announced that on the 30th of last month, they detected and forcibly removed illegal fishing nets installed by Chinese fishing vessels in the waters approximately 150 km southwest of Chagwido, which is within our Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ).
The nets that were found ranged from 300 to 500 meters in length and were approximately 70 meters wide. The end part of the net, often referred to as a "sweeping net," has a diameter of just about 2 cm. The use of these nets is banned in South Korea.
The Ministry plans to dispose of the collected nets and will request the Chinese side to take measures to prevent a recurrence.
