The Jeju Prosecutors' Office has charged and detained three people, including a common-law partner, for stealing the assets of an individual who became critically ill from COVID-19.

According to the prosecutor, the common-law spouse, identified as Mr. A, conspired with a paramour and a lawyer's office manager to embezzle 300 million won from a victim who was hospitalized with severe COVID-19.

Initially, the police indicted only Mr. A and the paramour, sending some parts of the case to the prosecution with a recommendation of no charges.

Further investigation revealed that the lawyer’s office manager was the main perpetrator of the crime.

The Supreme Prosecutor’s Office has lauded this as a 'model investigation,' highlighting its success in uncovering a case that could have gone unnoticed due to the victim's death.

내연남, 변호사 사무장 등과 공모해
코로나19 위중증으로 입원 중인 피해자의
재산 3억 원을 빼돌린 혐의를 받고 있습니다.

당초 경찰은 A 씨와 내연남만 기소하고
일부 무혐의 의견으로 검찰에 송치했지만
검찰이 재수사를 통해 범행을 주도한
변호사 사무장까지 구속해 재판에 넘겼습니다.

대검찰청은
이 사건에 대해 피해자의 사망으로
묻힐뻔 한 사건의 전모를 밝혀냈다며
형사부 '우수 수사 사례'로 선정했습니다.
