Citizens Catch ‘Hit and Run’ Teenager


A car is seen driving in the wrong direction on a road in Jeju City.
It hits two vehicles that were waiting at a traffic signal and then escapes down an alley.
The sudden accident causes chaos at the scene, and shortly after, a police car arrives.


A 19-year-old, identified only as A, who drove without a license and caused a hit-and-run accident, has been arrested.


The driver is suspected of hitting a car in the first lane on the road from Jeju City to Aewol, then crossing the central line and hitting vehicles in the opposite lane, causing damage to a total of six vehicles before fleeing.

A citizen who witnessed the scene chased the suspect’s vehicle and, after a pursuit of several hundred meters, caught the driver and handed him over to the police, preventing further damage.

There could have been a second accident since he was fleeing. When I chased him, he stopped the car, and everyone ran away. I told him to turn himself in to receive a lesser punishment. I persuaded him for about 10 minutes, then brought him back to the car.

The vehicle involved in the accident was stolen from an apartment parking lot early that morning and was severely damaged due to the impact.

The police have charged the 19-year-old driver, A, with unlicensed driving, hit-and-run causing injury, and theft, and are investigating the details of the accident.


Meanwhile, three minors and one person in their 30s, who fled the scene, were all in the vehicle.
The police plan to investigate them for possible conspiracy and additional offenses.

차량 6대를 들이 받고 도주한 혐의를 받고 있습니다.

현장을 목격한 시민이 사고 차량을 쫓아갔고
수 백미터 추격전 끝에 운전자를 잡아
경찰에 인계하면서 더 큰 피해를 막을 수 있었습니다.

2차 사고가 날 수 있잖아요. 도망가니까. 쫓아가니까 차를 세우고
와장창 다 도망갔어요. 더 가중처벌받게 되니까 자수해라. 지금 해라. 설득 한 10분 동안 앉혀서 다시 차 있는 곳으로 데려왔죠."


사고 차량은 당일 새벽,
아파트 주차장에서 훔친 것으로 드러났고
사고 충격으로
심하게 파손됐습니다.

경찰은 사고 차량 운전자 19살 A군을
무면허와 도주치상,
절도 혐의 등으로 입건해
사고 경위를 조사하고 있습니다.

한편 차량 안에는 미성년자 3명과
현장에서 달아난 30대 한 명 등 모두 5명이 타고 있었는데
경찰은
이들을 상대로 공모나
추가 범행 여부도 수사할 계획입니다.
