Cheonmicheon in Jeju Island has been elevated in status from a local stream to a national river, marking the first instance of such a promotion.

The National Water Resources Management Committee of the Ministry of Environment decided to designate a total of 20 rivers, including Cheonmicheon(천미천), as national rivers, considering the urgency of flood damage response and the need for integrated management.

Accordingly, 11.33 km of the lower region of the stream, from the Cheonmi reservoir to the coast of Pyoseon-myeon, totaling 28.98 km, is expected to be designated as a national river by 2025.

This promotion is aimed at enhancing disaster prevention by managing it as a national river, and more efficient management is anticipated in the future with national budget support.



천미천, 제주 첫 국가하천 승격…효율적 관리 기대

천미천이 제주에서 처음으로
지방하천에서 국가하천으로 승격됐습니다.

환경부 국가수자원관리위원회는
지방 하천 가운데
홍수 피해 대응 시급성과 통합관리 필요성 등을 고려해
천미천을 포함해 모두 20개 하천을
국가 하천으로 지정하기로 했습니다.

이에 따라
천미천 전체 28.98km 가운데
하류 지역인 천미저류지부터
표선면 해안까지 11.33km 구간이
2025년에 국가하천으로 지정될 예정입니다.

이번 승격은
재해 예방 강화차원에서 국가하천으로 지정 관리하기 위해 추진됐으며 앞으로 국가 재정 지원으로 더욱 효율적인 관리가 기대되고 있습니다.
