Smishing Scam: 'Father Passed Away' Alert


Recently, a worker, A, received a text message about a funeral.

It claimed that their father had passed away and included a link with the time and address for the funeral.

Though it looked like a normal funeral notice, it was actually a smishing text intended to install malware and steal financial information.

Fortunately, no harm was done as the link was not clicked.

I received a text last night saying someone's father had passed away and it seemed to be guiding me to a funeral with a link. I was curious about who it was and thought about clicking the link, but something felt off, so I didn’t. Lately, it seems a lot of people around me are receiving these texts. They say it's voice phishing.

The tactics of smishing are becoming increasingly sly and varied.



Clicking the URL in the received text installs a malicious app on the phone, which can then steal personal and financial information to divert money.


It can also send smishing texts to other numbers stored on the phone.


Previously, there were many texts pretending to be about parcel delivery, but recently there's an increase in texts masquerading as funeral notices or wedding invitations.


Especially since these texts are sent from regular phone numbers and not international calls, it's not easy to recognize them as smishing.

Consequently, the police are spreading awareness through SNS card news, and banks are also sending cautionary texts, but smishing crimes continue unabated.


In the past three years since 2020, there have been 28 cases of smishing in Jeju, and the number is increasing annually.


To prevent smishing damage, it's crucial not to click on unclear URLs, even if the text comes from a known number.


If a link has already been clicked, the police advise immediately switching the phone to airplane mode to prevent further damage.


Installing the police department's Citizen Conan app, which detects malicious apps, can also help prevent damage.



"아버지 돌아가셨어요" 알고보니 '스미싱'


최근 직장인 A가 받은 부고 문자메시지 한 통.

아버지가 돌아가셨다며
장례식장의 시간과 주소를 안내하는 링크가 첨부돼 있습니다.

평범한 부고 문자처럼 보이지만
사실은 악성코드를 설치하도록 유도해
금융정보 등을 빼내는 스미싱 문자입니다.

다행히 링크를 누르지 않으면서 피해는 발생하지 않았습니다.

보니까 어젯밤에 아버지가 돌아가셨다고 그러면서 장례식을 안내하는 듯한 링크랑 같이 보냈더라고요. 그래서 누군지 궁금해서 링크를 누를까 하는데 느낌이 이상해서 제가 안 눌렀거든요. 요즘 알고 보니까 이런 문자를 받는 분들이 주위에 되게 많다고. 보이스피싱이라고 하더라고요.

스미싱 수법은 갈수록 교묘해지고 다양해지고 있습니다.

전송된 문자에 있는 URL을 누르면 휴대전화에 악성 앱이 설치되고

이를 통해
개인정보나 금융정보를 빼내 돈을 가로채거나

해당 휴대전화에 저장된 다른 번호로
또다시 스미싱 문자를 보내기도 합니다.

이전에는 택배 배송 등을 가장한 문자가 많았지만
최근에는 부고 안내나 청첩장처럼
경조사를 가장한 경우가 늘어나고 있습니다.

특히 국제전화 등이 아닌
일반 휴대전화 번호로 문자가 전송되면서
스미싱 문자라는 사실을 인지하기 쉽지 않습니다.

이에 따라 경찰이
SNS 카드뉴스 등을 통해 주의사항을 알리고,

은행에서도 주의를 당부하는
문자를 전송하기도 하지만
스미싱 범죄는 끊이지 않고 있습니다.



지난 2020년부터 3년 간
제주에서 발생한 스미싱 범죄는 모두 28건으로,
매년 증가하고 있습니다.


스미싱으로 인한 피해를 예방하기 위해서는
아는 번호로 문자가 오더라도
출처가 불분명한 URL은 의심하고
누르지 않는 것이 가장 중요합니다.

만약 이미 링크를 눌렀다면
곧바로 휴대전화를 비행기 모드로 전환해
추가 피해를 막아야 한다고 경찰은 당부했습니다.

또 평소 악성 앱을 탐지하는
경찰청 시티즌 코난 앱을 설치하면 피해 예방에 도움이 될 수 있습니다.
