Haenyeo Painter and the Sea of Jeju


Along the black basalt road that leads to the sea, a seemingly endless stretch of orange clouds appear to blanket the sky above.
This captivating scene is the subject of an acrylic painting by Na Kyung-ah, titled "On the Way to Work: Another Day."


The artist, who is both the youngest haenyeo woman diver in her fishing community and a painter, captured the haenyeo carrying their gear on their backs. She then transforms this scene through her abstract paintings.


The video footage of diving, shot by the artist herself, has become a precious source of inspiration and material for her works.

Her ethereal works, which seem to depict the view from underwater looking up to the surface, are conceived as a series and are capturing public attention.

I wanted to capture the feeling of the water surface and the air that I experience while diving. The rippling of the water, whether calm or rough, we still have to go diving, and I wanted to encapsulate that feeling.

The Jeju Haenyeo Museum's first special exhibition titled “How I Became a Haenyeo,” is meant to showcase the works of haenyeo who are active in various fields while maintaining their primary profession of diving.


After majoring in Western painting at university and then graduating from (법환) Beophwan Haenyeo School in Jeju, the artist is currently diving in (태흥) Taeheung fishing village and continuing her artistic activities.
Through this exhibition, she gives an account of endless stories of the sea.

Working alone in my studio and working alone in the sea feel similar to me. I kept going to the sea because I love it, and eventually started diving... Somehow, I ended up becoming a real haenyeo. This is the path that has brought me to where I am today.

Starting with this first haenyeo artist exhibition, the Jeju Haenyeo Museum plans to continue hosting exhibitions for haenyeo artists in various genres, including paintings, photography, and crafts.




해녀화가, 제주 바다를 그리다

주황색의 구름 같은 물체가

새까만 현무암길을 따라
끊임없이 뻗어 나아가는 듯 합니다.

테왁을 지고 물질에 나서는 해녀들의 모습을
카메라에 담아 내고
다시 추상화로 표현했습니다.

직접 촬영한 물질기록 영상들은
작가에게 영감을 주는
소중한 작품 소재가 됐습니다.

흔히 볼 수 없는
물 속에서 수면 위를 바라보는 듯한
몽환적인 작품들은
시리즈로 구상돼 눈길을 사로잡습니다.

제가 물질을 하면서 바라다보는 수면과 공기의 느낌을
다 담고 싶었고요. 물의 일렁임, 물이 세거나 거칠거나 이래도 우리는 물질을 가야 되니까 그런 느낌을 담아보고 싶었습니다.




해녀박물관이
본업인 물질을 하며 다양한 분야에서 활동하는
해녀들의 작품을 선보이기 위해 마련한 첫번째 기획전,
'나는 어쩌다 해녀가 되었다' 입니다.

대학에서 서양화를 전공한 후
제주로 와 법환 해녀학교를 졸업하고
현재는 태흥2리 어촌계에서
물질을 하며
작품활동을 이어가고 있는 작가는
이번 전시를 통해
멈추지 않는 바다의 이야기를 풀어냈습니다.

혼자 작업실에서 작업을 하는 것과 물에서 혼자 작업을 하는 것은
저는 비슷한 맥락인 것 같아요. 바다가 좋아서 바다에 자꾸 가다 보니 다이빙도 하게 됐고 그러다 보니 관심사가 해녀한테도 가게 되더라고요. 그래서 어쩌다 보니 진짜 해녀가 돼 있어요. 지금은.




해녀박물관은
이번 첫 해녀아티스트 작품 기획전을 시작으로
그림뿐 아니라
사진과 공예품 등
다양한 장르의 해녀작가들을 발굴해 전시회를 이어갈 계획입니다.
