Flower Market Withers with Soaring Prices

This is a flower shop in Jeju City.

Although the shop is filled with flowers, there are hardly any customers.

The price of a single rose reaching 7,000 won, among other price increases, has significantly reduced the number of customers looking for flowers.

There was hope that demand would increase during the graduation and school opening season, but the usual specials did not materialize this year.

Now we try to make do by reducing the size a bit to match the price, but when customers actually receive them, they tend to be disappointed, thinking the flowers have become quite expensive or the sizes have shrunk.

As of early March, the auction price for a bunch of roses at the (양재동) Yangjae-dong Flower Market in Seoul has normally sold for around 9,000 won, but this year it has reached 12,000 won.

Compared to a year ago, this is an increase of more than 30%.

Firstly, the reliance on imported fresh flowers has increased, and the effects of climate change have also reduced production, which is interpreted as reasons for the price increase.

Furthermore, the increase in heating costs has also raised the financial burden on floriculture farms, further driving up prices.

From the perspective of flower shops that bring in and sell fresh flowers at retail, a price increase is inevitable.

Since the cost of flowers is quite high, people opt for other types of gifts, and we can't just not raise our prices. But we also don't make much profit. We're almost operating at a loss.

The floriculture industry agrees that it is difficult to expect special demand during the family month of May, which includes Parents' Day and Teachers' Day, due to price increases and the economic downturn.




치솟은 가격에…시들어버린 꽃시장


제주시내 한 꽃집입니다.

꽃들이 한가득 진열돼 있지만
손님 발길은 뜸하기만 합니다.

장미 한 송이 값이 7천원에 이르는 등
가격이 부쩍 오르면서
꽃을 찾는 고객이 크게 줄어든 겁니다.

졸업식과 개학식 시즌에는
수요가 늘지 않을까 기대했지만
예년과 같은 특수는 없었습니다.

이제 사이즈를 조금 줄여서 금액을 맞춰 가지고 최대한 만들어 드리려고 하는데 막상 받아보시면 꽃값이 많이 오른 것 같다, 크기가 작다 등 좀 실망스러워하시죠.


3월 초 기준 서울 양재동 화훼공판장에서 경매된
장미 한 단 가격은 9천원선을 유지하다
올해 1만 2천원 선을 기록하고 있습니다.

1년 전과 비교하면 30% 이상 급등했습니다.

우선 생화 수입 의존도가 높아진데다
기후변화 여파로 생산량까지 줄면서
가격이 오른 것으로 풀이됩니다.

여기에 난방비 상승으로
화훼농가의 비용 부담이 커진 점도
가격 상승을 부추겼습니다.

소매로 생화를 가져와 판매하는
꽃가게 입장에선
가격 인상이 불가피한 상황입니다.
