Hopes for Ease on Recession

This area of Jeju City, popular with foreigners, is bustling with duty-free shops and commercial centers.

The local commercial areas, severely impacted by COVID-19, have recently regained vitality, especially with the increase in Chinese tourists.

Merchants, although still facing challenges, are hopeful due to the increase in foreign tourists.

After the end of COVID, from last year and this year, with the influx of Chinese tourists and more international cruise ships, the streets have become more vibrant, and the nearby commercial areas seem to be reviving. We are also seeing a slight increase in our sales.

So far this year, the number of foreign tourists visiting Jeju has reached approximately 434,800, an increase of 8.7% compared to the same period in 2019, before COVID-19.


The total number of tourists, including domestic ones, is maintaining last year's level, but the increase is expected to continue.

This increase in spring travel demand has led to 45 additional weekly domestic flights this month, and international flights have also increased during the summer season with the expansion of regular routes to China and additional flights on existing routes.

Along with the tourism industry, the construction industry, a key economic sector in Jeju, is also expected to see some relief from its recent downturn. A total of 500 billion won worth of large-scale tourism development projects are scheduled to commence this year, which could provide some breathing space for construction investment.

Recently, the Jeju economy has been sluggish due to a contraction in consumption and housing markets. However, there has been an increase in tourists, primarily foreigners, which seems to be alleviating the recent downturn.


Alongside this, the Housing Market Outlook Index for local housing developers this month is 84.2, a 21.1-point increase from last month.

The Korea Housing Institute analyzed that the increase in foreign tourists, the turnaround in actual apartment transaction prices, and governmental efforts to stabilize housing are positively influencing the housing market outlook.

코로나 끝나고 작년, 올해부터 중국인 관광객 그리고 크루즈가 많이 들어오면서 거리도 많이 활성화되는 것 같고 근처 상권도 많이 살아나는 것 같습니다. 저희도 매출이 약간 상승되는 효과를 보고 있고요.

올들어 지금까지
제주를 찾은 외국인 관광객은 43만 4천8백여명으로
코로나19 이전인
2019년 같은 기간과 비교해 8.7% 증가했습니다.


내국인까지 합친 전체 관광객 수는
지난해 수준을 유지하고 있지만
앞으로 관광객 증가세가 이어질 전망입니다.

봄철 여행 수요에 대응해
이달 국내선 항공편이 주 45회 임시 증편되고
국제선도
하계기간 중국 정기노선 확대와
기존 노선 증편이 이뤄졌기 때문입니다.

관광업과 함께 제주경제의 근간산업인 건설업도
부진이 완화될 것으로 보입니다.

올해 총 5천억 규모의 대규모 관광개발 사업이
잇따라 착공될 예정으로
건설투자에 다소간 숨통이 트일 수 있습니다.

최근 제주경제는 소비와 주택 경기 위축 등으로 부진한 흐름을 보였는데요. 최근 들어서 관광객 같은 경우가 외국인을 중심으로 증가세를 보이고 있어 최근 부진한 흐름이 다소 완화되고 있는 모습입니다.


이와 함께 도내 주택사업자들이 바라보는
이달 주택경기전망지수는 84.2로
한 달 새 21.1포인트 상승했습니다.

주택산업연구원은
외국인 관광객 증가와
아파트 실거래가 상승 전환.
주거 안정화를 위한 행정의 노력이
주택 시장 전망에 긍정적인 요인으로 작용했다고 분석했습니다.
