The annual migration of the tropical armyworm to Korea signals a time of increased vigilance for farmers and agricultural experts.

This year, the pests have been spotted sooner than expected, raising concerns about potential harm to the upcoming harvest.

On the 11th, the Jeju Agricultural Technology Center reported sightings of the tropical armyworm in Suwon-ri, Hallim-eup. This was about a week earlier than last year, underscoring the importance of early detection and immediate action.

These armyworms typically ride the spring westerlies, a pattern of winds that assists their journey into Korea.

With Jeju's super-sweet corn harvest nearing in early June, heightened monitoring and protective measures are crucial.

해마다 이맘때쯤 우리나라로 날아와 농작물에 적지 않은 피해를 주는 열대거세미나방이 일찍 유입되면서 철저한 예찰과 신속한 방제가 요구되고 있습니다.

제주도농업기술원은 지난 11일 한림읍 수원리에 설치한 트랩에서 열대거세미나방을 발견했다며
이는 지난해 보다 일주일 가량 이른 것이라고 밝혔습니다.

열대거세미나방은 봄철 편서풍을 타고 국내로 유입되며 옥수수와 기장 등 벼과 작물을 갉아먹어 큰 피해를 주고 있습니다.

제주의 경우 6월 상순 초당옥수수 수확을 앞두고 있어 적지 예찰과 방제에 각별한 주의가 요구되고 있습니다.
