Dry Weather Advisory, Fire Warning


The walking paths where tall grass grew have all turned to ash.

Firefighters are moving through the area extinguishing fires.

In the distance, flames that have not yet been contained are visible.


Last weekend, a fire broke out near the Seopjikoji walking trail in (성산읍) Seongsan-eup, Seogwipo City.

Although no one was injured in the fire, the dry grass allowed the flames to spread quickly, burning about 1,300 square meters of grassland, palm mats, and landscaping facilities.

Evidence suggests that a discarded cigarette butt may have sparked the fire.

With the ongoing dry weather, it is crucial to exercise caution as grassland fires can ignite easily.

In the last five years, there have been about 150 wildfires in Jeju.
This year alone, more than 40 have already occurred.

Wildfires are more likely to occur between March and May when the weather is dry and there is a moderate breeze.

The leading cause of fire is negligence, particularly practices like burning trash and discarding cigarette butts. Burning trash is responsible for 32.3% of fires, followed by discarded cigarette butts and unattended embers.

A dry weather advisory has been in place for the mountainous and northern mid-mountain regions of Jeju since May 17th. This advisory is due to the continued clear weather which is expected to cause increasingly dry air conditions.

Even a small spark can lead to a large fire, so caution is of the utmost importance.

The recent hot, dry weather and strong winds have led to approximately 48 outdoor wildfires this year, caused by improperly extinguished cigarette butts or careless burning practices. After smoking or burning, ensure that all embers are completely extinguished before departing.

To prevent wildfires, fire authorities strongly recommend avoiding carrying combustible items like lighters when hiking in areas like volcanic cones.



건조특보 이어져, 들불 화재 ‘주의’


풀이 높게 자라있던 산책로 일대가
온통 잿더미로 변했습니다.

소방대원들이 곳곳을 다니며
진화 작업을 벌입니다.

저 멀리 아직 잡히지 않은 불길이 이글거립니다.

지난 주말, 서귀포시 성산읍
섭지코지 산책로 인근에서 불이 났습니다.

이 불로 다친 사람은 없었지만
풀이 메말라
불길이 주위로 빠르게 번지면서
야초지 1천 3백여 제곱미터와
야자수 매트, 조경시설 등이 불에 탔습니다.

누군가 버린 담배꽁초로 인해
불이 난 것으로 추정되고 있습니다.

건조한 날씨가 이어지면서
야초지 화재가 발생하기 쉬운 만큼
각별한 주의가 요구되고 있습니다.”

최근 5년 사이 제주에서 발생한 들불 화재는 150여 건.

올들어서도 벌써 40건 넘게 발생했습니다.


주로 대기가 건조하고 적당한 바람이 불면서
불이 나기 쉬운 조건으로
봄철인 3월에서 5월 사이에 화재가 집중되고 있습니다.

쓰레기를 태우거나 담배꽁초 등
부주의로 인한 화재가 대부분을 차지하고 있는데,

쓰레기소각이 32.3%로 가장 많았고,
담배꽁초, 불씨 방치 등의 순으로 나타났습니다.

지난 17일부터,
제주 산지와 북부 중산간 지역에
건조특보가 발효된 가운데
당분간 맑은 날씨가 이어지면서
대기는 점차 더 건조해질 것으로 보입니다.

작은 불씨도 큰 불로 이어질 수 있어
산불 등 각종 화재에 주의해야 합니다.

최근 고온의 건조한 날씨와 강한 바람이 불면서 제대로 끄지 않은 담배꽁초나 소각 부주의에 의한 화염 방치로 올해 약 48건의 야외 들불 화재가 발생했습니다. 흡연 후 담뱃불이나 소각 후 불씨는 완전히 꺼진 이후에 이동하시기 바랍니다.

들불을 예방하기 위해서는
오름 등을 오를 때
라이터 같은 인화성 물질을 가지고 가지 않아야 한다고
소방당국은 당부했습니다.
