Island Investigations on Club Drugs Last month, a drug trafficking and distribution network involved in selling drugs such as Ecstasy and Ketamine in karaoke bars and foreigner-exclusive clubs in South (경상) Gyeongsang Province was apprehended by the Coast Guard. Amidst a series of drug crimes occurring in clubs and bars nationwide, a similar drug offender has been arrested in Jeju as well. A man in his 30s, identified as Mr. A, who was formerly affiliated with a club, has been arrested last month on suspicion of possessing dozens of Ecstasy pills and consuming them. Jeju District Prosecutor's Office has indicted Mr. A on charges of drug possession and consumption, and they have also announced that they are conducting supplementary investigations into individuals who were involved in drug consumption with him. Ecstasy, a new type of drug, is known as a "club drug" as it is primarily consumed by young people. It has a hallucinogenic effect that is three times stronger than that of methamphetamine. INTERVIEW Jo Gwang-won / Jeju Office, Korean Society of Drug Abuse Ecstasy is known to produce hallucinogenic effects that can induce a significant elevation in mood. It is indeed a drug that is commonly used by young people. The Jeju Provincial Police Agency has stated that this case is unrelated to clubs, and it is difficult to disclose specific details regarding the case, including the specific charges, as the investigation is still ongoing. According to the Korea Customs Service, the amount of newly identified drugs seized last year was 260 kg, which is more than a tenfold increase compared to two years ago. Among them, the quantity of Ecstasy seizures increased by seven times during the same period. With the recent arrest of an Ecstasy drug offender in Jeju, there is growing interest in whether the crimes are linked to related industries, as seen in nationwide cases, rather than being isolated incidents of individual crimes. The investigation results regarding any potential spread of crime to associated sectors have garnered significant attention. 제주에도 클럽 마약?…경찰 수사 확대 지난 달 경남에 있는 노래주점과 외국인 전용 클럽 등에서 엑스터시와 케타민 등 마약류를 판매한 판매책과 유통 조직이 해경에 검거됐습니다. 전국적으로 클럽이나 술집에서 마약 범죄가 잇따르는 가운데 제주에서도 유사 마약 사범이 검거됐습니다. 모 클럽 관계자였던 30대 A 씨가 지난 달 엑스터시 수십 정을 소지하고 투약한 혐의로 구속됐습니다. 제주지검은 A 씨를 마약류 소지와 투약 혐의로 구속 기소했고 함께 투약한 이들에 대해서도 보완 수사를 진행하고 있다고 밝혔습니다. 엑스터시는 필로폰보다 환각 작용이 3배나 큰 신종 마약류로 젊은 층이 주로 투약하면서 일명 클럽용 마약으로도 알려졌습니다. <인터뷰 : 고광언/ 한국마약범죄학회 제주지회장> 엑스터시를 투약하면 환각작용을 일으켜서 기분이 아주 상승되는 효과를 누리는 마약으로 알려지고 있습니다. 젊은 사람들이 많이 이용하는 마약으로 보면 되겠습니다. 제주경찰청은 이번 사건은 클럽과는 무관하다면서도 구체적인 혐의점 등은 수사가 진행 중이여서 밝히기 어렵다고 전했습니다. 지난해 관세청이 적발한 신종 마약류는 260kg으로 2년 전보다 10배 이상 급증했습니다. 이 가운데 엑스터시 적발 물량은 같은 기간 7배나 늘었습니다. 제주에서도 엑스터시 마약 사범이 검거된 가운데 개인의 단순 범죄가 아닌 전국 사례처럼 연관 업종으로 범죄가 퍼졌을지 수사 결과에 관심이 모아지고 있습니다.

  • Dry Weather Advisory, Fire Warning The walking paths where tall grass grew have all turned to ash. Firefighters are moving through the area extinguishing fires. In the distance, flames that have not yet been contained are visible. Last weekend, a fire broke out near the Seopjikoji walking trail in (성산읍) Seongsan-eup, Seogwipo City. Although no one was injured in the fire, the dry grass allowed the flames to spread quickly, burning about 1,300 square meters of grassland, palm mats, and landscaping facilities. Evidence suggests that a discarded cigarette butt may have sparked the fire. With the ongoing dry weather, it is crucial to exercise caution as grassland fires can ignite easily. In the last five years, there have been about 150 wildfires in Jeju. This year alone, more than 40 have already occurred. Wildfires are more likely to occur between March and May when the weather is dry and there is a moderate breeze. The leading cause of fire is negligence, particularly practices like burning trash and discarding cigarette butts. Burning trash is responsible for 32.3% of fires, followed by discarded cigarette butts and unattended embers. A dry weather advisory has been in place for the mountainous and northern mid-mountain regions of Jeju since May 17th. This advisory is due to the continued clear weather which is expected to cause increasingly dry air conditions. Even a small spark can lead to a large fire, so caution is of the utmost importance. INTERVIEW Kim Hyun-seok / Investigator, Jeju Fire Safety Headquarters The recent hot, dry weather and strong winds have led to approximately 48 outdoor wildfires this year, caused by improperly extinguished cigarette butts or careless burning practices. After smoking or burning, ensure that all embers are completely extinguished before departing. To prevent wildfires, fire authorities strongly recommend avoiding carrying combustible items like lighters when hiking in areas like volcanic cones. 건조특보 이어져, 들불 화재 ‘주의’ 풀이 높게 자라있던 산책로 일대가 온통 잿더미로 변했습니다. 소방대원들이 곳곳을 다니며 진화 작업을 벌입니다. 저 멀리 아직 잡히지 않은 불길이 이글거립니다. 지난 주말, 서귀포시 성산읍 섭지코지 산책로 인근에서 불이 났습니다. 이 불로 다친 사람은 없었지만 풀이 메말라 불길이 주위로 빠르게 번지면서 야초지 1천 3백여 제곱미터와 야자수 매트, 조경시설 등이 불에 탔습니다. 누군가 버린 담배꽁초로 인해 불이 난 것으로 추정되고 있습니다. 건조한 날씨가 이어지면서 야초지 화재가 발생하기 쉬운 만큼 각별한 주의가 요구되고 있습니다.” 최근 5년 사이 제주에서 발생한 들불 화재는 150여 건. 올들어서도 벌써 40건 넘게 발생했습니다. 주로 대기가 건조하고 적당한 바람이 불면서 불이 나기 쉬운 조건으로 봄철인 3월에서 5월 사이에 화재가 집중되고 있습니다. 쓰레기를 태우거나 담배꽁초 등 부주의로 인한 화재가 대부분을 차지하고 있는데, 쓰레기소각이 32.3%로 가장 많았고, 담배꽁초, 불씨 방치 등의 순으로 나타났습니다. 지난 17일부터, 제주 산지와 북부 중산간 지역에 건조특보가 발효된 가운데 당분간 맑은 날씨가 이어지면서 대기는 점차 더 건조해질 것으로 보입니다. 작은 불씨도 큰 불로 이어질 수 있어 산불 등 각종 화재에 주의해야 합니다. <인터뷰 : 김현석 / 제주소방안전본부 광역화재조사단 선임 조사관 > 최근 고온의 건조한 날씨와 강한 바람이 불면서 제대로 끄지 않은 담배꽁초나 소각 부주의에 의한 화염 방치로 올해 약 48건의 야외 들불 화재가 발생했습니다. 흡연 후 담뱃불이나 소각 후 불씨는 완전히 꺼진 이후에 이동하시기 바랍니다. 들불을 예방하기 위해서는 오름 등을 오를 때 라이터 같은 인화성 물질을 가지고 가지 않아야 한다고 소방당국은 당부했습니다.

  • Jeju Chickenpox Cases Surge
  • This year in Jeju, there has been a growing concern as more than 100 cases of chickenpox have been reported each month. According to the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency, from the beginning of the year to this month, the cumulative number of chickenpox patients in the Jeju region has reached 520, which is double the number from the same period last year. The incidence rate per 100,000 population is 77, the highest among the 17 cities and provinces in the country, and more than twice as high as Ulsan, which has the second highest rate. Health authorities suspect that the large daily temperature range and group infections in schools and other collective living situations are contributing factors.   • Slight Rise in Jeju Employment
  • Employment numbers in the region continue to climb, although at a slower pace. According to the Jeju Office of the Honam Regional Statistics Office, the number of people employed in the province increased by 2,000 last month compared to the same month last year, marking a continuous increase for four months. However, the margin of increase in the number of employed people decreased by 6,000 compared to March.   • Teen Faces 4-8 years for Illegal Filming
  • The prosecution has upheld its sentencing recommendation, proposing a maximum of eight years and a minimum of four years in prison for a teenager for illegally filming in a women's restroom of a high school. The Jeju District Court's Second Criminal Division held a final hearing for the defendant, ‘A’, who was arrested and charged with violations of the law against sexual violence. According to the indictment, from September last year, ‘A’ illegally filmed over 200 times in the restroom at a local high school and is accused of illegally distributing content on social media approximately ten times. Although the prosecution mentioned that agreements had been reached with some of the victims, they emphasized the large number of victims and their ongoing suffering as reasons for their sentencing recommendation. A’s sentencing is scheduled for the 5th of next month. 고교 화장실 불법 촬영 10대 중형 구형…내달 선고 검찰이 도내 한 고등학교와 식당 여자 화장실에서 불법 촬영한 혐의로 재판에 넘겨진 10대 피고인에 대해 장기 8년과 단기 4년 구형을 유지했습니다. 제주지방법원 제2형사부는 성폭력처벌법 위반 등의 혐의로 구속기소된 A 피고인에 대한 재결심 공판을 열었습니다. 공소사실에 따르면 A 피고인은 지난해 9월부터 도내 고등학교와 식당 여자화장실에서 2백여 차례에 걸쳐 피해자들을 불법 촬영하고 10차례 SNS 등에 불법 유포한 혐의를 받고 있습니다. 검찰은 일부 피해자들과 합의했지만 피해자가 다수이고 고통을 호소하고 있다며 구형사유를 설명했습니다. A 피고인에 대한 선고는 다음달 5일 내려질 예정입니다.
