Nation’s Largest Food Waste Facility


The Jeju food waste treatment facility is finally complete.

It took seven years since the project’s initial launch in 2017.


After eight months of trial operations, the system will be fully operational starting next month.


The food waste treatment facility, which cost 131.8 billion won, is set on a 32,700 square meter site near the (색달동) Saekdal-dong landfill in Seogwipo City.

It is equipped with facilities for food waste intake and preprocessing, wastewater treatment, and odor reduction.


The facility can process up to 340 tons of food waste per day.

This is more than enough to handle the 240 tons of food waste generated daily in Jeju.


Starting in January of this year, it commenced processing food waste from Jeju City, followed by Seogwipo City in February, thereby ensuring stable operations.

Emergency lines are set up to be ready for mechanical or system failures.

An emergency line has been added to the waste treatment system. In case of a failure, the emergency line can be activated to process all the waste while the faulty line is being repaired.


A noteworthy development has been the application of a method to utilize biogas produced during waste treatment as a source of fuel.

Through the reuse of biogas-generated fuel for facility operations, the company anticipates a substantial reduction in annual operating costs of 5.2 billion won, along with a decrease of 1,140 tons in greenhouse gas emissions.

70% of the electricity used to operate the facility is supplied by the biogas produced here. It is a facility that allows for natural resource circulation.

As the nation's biggest food waste recycling facility,
the objective is stable food waste processing and eco-friendly energy recycling, benefiting residents and the environment through carbon neutrality.



음식물 쓰레기 하루 340t 처리…다음달 가동


제주 광역 음식물류 폐기물 처리 시설이 준공됐습니다.

지난 2017년 사업을 본격 추진한 지 7년 만입니다.

8개월 간의 시운전을 마쳤고
다음 달부터 본격적으로 가동됩니다.

사업비로 1천 318억 원이 투입된
광역 음식물류 폐기물 시설은
서귀포시 색달동 쓰레기 매립장 인근
3만 2천 7백여㎡ 부지에 설치됐습니다.

음식물 쓰레기 반입과 전처리,
폐수 처리, 악취저감 설비 등을 갖추고 있습니다.

해당 시설에서 하루 처리 가능한 음식물 쓰레기는 340톤.

제주에서 하루 평균 배출되는
음식물 쓰레기 240톤을 처리하고도 남는 용량입니다.

올해 1월,
제주시내 배출 음식물 쓰레기 처리를 시작해
2월부터는
서귀포시 물량까지 소화하면서 안정적인 운영을 확인했습니다.

기계 또는 시스템 고장,
오작동에 대비한 비상 라인도 구축돼 있습니다.

(폐기물 처리) 비상 라인이 하나 추가로 반영됐습니다. 고장이 났을 때도 비상 라인을 가동 시켜서 고장난 라인을 수리할 동안 (쓰레기) 전량 처리 가능합니다.

특히 최근 공법 적용으로
폐기물 처리 과정에서 발생되는 바이오가스를
연료로 공급하는 시스템이 갖춰졌습니다.

바이오 가스로 만들어진 연료는 시설 운영에 재사용돼
연간 52억 원의 운영비와
온실가스 1천여 톤의 절감 효과를 기대하고 있습니다.

여기서 만들어진 바이오 가스를 가지고 시설 운영하는데 쓰이는 전기 70%를 소모하도록 돼 있습니다. 자연적인 자원 순환이 될 수 있는 시설입니다.

도민 편의와 탄소 중립이라는
