'Jeju Cherries' Harvest Underway


This cherry farm has begun its second harvest since planting the trees.


The production volume has more than doubled compared to last year, raising the farm's expectations.

Jeju cherries boast a unique red color and a sugar content of over 20 Brix.


With their high sugar content, they are differentiated from imported cherries.

This year's Jeju cherries are being sold at around 35,000 won per kilogram, which is slightly higher than the price of imported cherries, benefiting the farmers' income.

This oriental variety of cherries is soft and juicy. It has been confirmed to have a sugar content over 3 Brix higher.

There are 13 farms cultivating cherries in Jeju, with a farming complex in the (애월) Aewol area jointly distributing them.


Although cherries are sensitive to temperature and humidity, making cultivation challenging, the high prices they command are drawing attention as a new high-income crop.


Especially, Jeju cherries are shipped more than ten days earlier than those from other regions, raising expectations for their price.

Cultivation is quite difficult and labor-intensive, so I think the price should be quite high. However, from our farmers' perspective, the more consumption there is, the more we can lower the price to promote and sell.

Jeju Agricultural Research and Extension Service plans to establish cultivation techniques suitable for the agricultural environment in Jeju and strengthen on-site guidance, as it is still in the early stages.

To improve quality, we are conducting Tyvek cultivation (mulch cultivation) and providing pre-cooling machines (rapid cooling machines) to maintain quality during shipment.

Although the import rate of cherries still reaches 90%, as cherry production in Jeju gradually stabilizes, domestic consumers are expected to enjoy high-quality domestic cherries.

지난해보다 2배 이상 늘어난 생산량에
농가의 기대가 더 높아졌습니다.

특유의 붉은빛에 당도는 20브릭스가 넘는 제주산 체리.

고당도의 품질로
외국산 수입 체리와 차별화됩니다.

올해 제주산 체리는 1kg에 35000원 수준에 판매되고 있는데
수입산보다 좀 더 높은 가격으로 농가 소득에 도움이 되고 있습니다.

이 동양계 체리는 부드럽고 과즙이 풍부합니다. 당도도 3브릭스 이상 높은 걸로 확인됩니다.

제주지역에서 체리를 재배하는 농가는 13곳으로
애월지역에서 단지를 이뤄 공동 출하하고 있습니다.

온도와 습도에 민감한 작목인만큼 재배가 까다롭긴 하지만
높은 가격을 받을 수 있어
새로운 고소득작목으로 주목받고 있습니다.

특히 제주지역 체리는 다른 지역보다
열흘 이상 일찍 출하해 가격에 대한 기대가 더 높습니다.

재배가 상당히 어렵고 손이 많이 가고 그래서 가격은 상당히 높아야 하지 않나 생각하지만, 우리 농가 입장에서는 소비가 많으면 많을수록 가격을 낮춰서 홍보하고 판매할 생각입니다.


농업기술센터는 도입 초기인 만큼
제주지역 농업 환경에 적합한 재배기술을 정립하고
현장지도를 강화한다는 방침입니다.

품질을 좋게 하기 위해서 저희가 타이벡 재배(피복 재배)라든지 출하가 이뤄지고 있습니다. 출하시 품질 유지를 위해서 예냉기(급속 저온 기계)를 공급하고 있습니다.

체리 수입비율은 아직까지 90%에 달하는 상황.

제주에서의 체리 생산이 점차 안정화되면
국내 소비자들도
좋은 품질의 국내산 체리를 맛볼 수 있을 것으로 기대됩니다.
