The number of Jeju Haenyeo (female women divers), recognized by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage, is rapidly declining.

Provincial reports show that the number of haenyeo, which was around 5,800 in the year 2000, had decreased to about 3,900 by 2017, and further dropped to around 2,800 last year. This means that nearly 3,000 haenyeo have disappeared within a generation.

The number of newly registered haenyeos also continues to decline, with 30 new divers in 2020, 28 in 2022, and just 23 last year. Factors such as low annual income, approximately 7 million won, and stringent requirements for new divers are cited as reasons for this decline.

제주 해녀의 수가 매년 줄어들고 있습니다.

제주특별자치도에 따르면 지난 2천년, 5천 8백명에 달했던 제주 해녀는 2017년 3천 9백여 명으로 줄어든 이후 지난해에는 2천 8백여 명으로 한 세대도 안돼 약 3천 명이 사라졌습니다.

신규 등록 해녀는 2020년 30명에서 2022년 28명, 지난해에는 23명으로 해마다 감소하고 있습니다.

연간 7백만 원 수준의 낮은 소득과 까다로운 신규 해녀 가입 조건 등이 원인으로 꼽히고 있습니다.
