Holiday Slump Hits Local Economy


The peak summer holiday season, from late July to early August, has begun. However, bad weather has kept people from the beach.

Along the sandy beach, all the parasols are tied up in rows, and the seasonal restaurants are empty.

Occasional visitors who seek out activities in the water do not stay long due to the unpredictable weather.

Persistent rain has added to the frequency of business closures since the beach opened, intensifying the worries of nearby merchants.

We can't ignore the impact of the weather because it's the rainy season. Although foreigners do come in, our culture doesn't quite match their preferences, so sales are also sluggish.


This month's consumer sentiment index has slightly increased compared to last month, but it has been below the baseline for 12 consecutive months.

A consumer sentiment index below 100 means more households have a negative view of the economic situation.

This year stands in contrast to last July, when the holiday season's expectations pushed the index above the baseline.

Jeju's economy is heavily reliant on tourism and thus experiences significant fluctuations based on the volume of tourist arrivals.

As a result, the summer season has typically been a period of economic growth. However, this year’s sluggish sales and a drop in domestic tourism point to lackluster performance.


Given this situation, the business sentiment index across all sectors remains in decline, even during the holiday season.

In particular, non-manufacturing sectors such as retail, transportation, and business services continue to struggle.

Local businesses cited sluggish domestic demand as their biggest challenge, followed by labor shortages, rising labor costs, and limited liquidity.

Looking at the private consumption indicators for Q2, we recorded negative growth. Domestic demand is sluggish. Accordingly, domestic tourists' credit card spending is also expected to decrease, indicating insufficient improvements in Jeju's economy in terms of consumption and employment.

Amidst slowing domestic demand, soaring summer-related expenses like airfare and dining out remain high, raising concerns that sluggish consumption could deteriorate even further.



휴가철에도 더딘 소비…지역경제 '침울'


7월말 8월초로 이어지는
본격적인 여름 휴가철이 시작됐지만
궂은 날씨에
해수욕장은 한산하기만 합니다.

모래사장을 따라 길게 늘어선 파라솔은 모두 묶여있고
한철 장사를 하는 계절음식점은 텅 비었습니다.

간혹 오는 물놀이객도
오락가락하는 날씨에 오래 머물지 못합니다.

잦은 비날씨로 해수욕장 개장 이후 개점 휴업하는 날이 많아지면서 주변 상인들의 한숨도 커지고 있습니다.

장마철 기간이기 때문에 날씨 여파를 무시하지는 못하고 있어요. 외국인도 들어오긴 하지만 그들의 정서랑 우리 문화가 조금 안 맞아서 판매가 저조한 부분도 있고…

이달 소비자심리지수는
지난달보다 소폭 상승했지만
12개월 연속 기준치에 미치지 못하고 있습니다.

소비자심리지수가 100보다 작으면
경제상황을 부정적으로 보는 가구가 더 많다는 뜻입니다.

지난해 7월 휴가철 기대감으로 기준치를 웃돌았던 것과
대조되는 모습입니다.


관광 서비스업 비중이 높은 제주는
관광객 수에 따라 지역경제 희비가 엇갈립니다.

이로 인해 휴가철에는
경기 상황이 나아지는 경향을 보여왔는데
올해는
소비 침체와 내국인 관광객 감소로
휴가철 특수가
예년만 못할 전망입니다.



상황이 이렇다 보니
전 업종의 기업심리지수는
휴가철에도 하락세를 면치 못하고 있습니다.

특히 도소매업과 운수업, 사업서비스 등
비제조업의 부진이 이어지고 있는 것으로 나타났습니다.


도내 기업들이 꼽은 경영 애로사항도
내수 부진이 가장 많았으며
인력난과 인건비 상승, 자금 부족 등이 뒤를 이었습니다.

2분기 민간 소비 지표를 보면 마이너스 성장을 기록했습니다. 국내 내수가 부진한 상황인데요. 이에 따라 내국인 관광객 신용카드 소비액도 줄어들 것으로 보이고 그렇다 보니 소비나 고용 등 제주경제 개선세가 미흡한 것으로 보입니다.

내수 침체에도
항공료와 외식비용 등
여름철 물가는 고공행진을 이어가면서
소비 부진이 더 심화될 수 있다는 우려가 나오고 있습니다.
