The ongoing heatwave has affected carrot germination in the eastern region.

In Gujwa-eup, a major carrot production area, carrot sowing began last month, but about 40% of the sown seeds have not germinated for over 15 days.

Carrots usually germinate a week after sowing, but the heatwave warning and lack of rain have caused the seeds to dry out and die.

Jeju Province and the agricultural cooperative are assessing the exact extent of the damage and installing water bags in key locations to provide water support.

당근 주산지인 구좌읍 일대에는 지난 달 부터 당근 파종이 시작돼
현재 40% 가량 마무리 됐지만 보름 넘게 발아되지 않는
현상이 나타나고 있습니다.

보통 파종 후 일주일 지나면 발아가 되는데 폭염 경보가 발효되고
이 기간 비도 내리지 않으면서 땅 속에서 말라 죽는 피해가
발생하고 있습니다.

제주도와 농협은 정확한 피해규모를 파악하는 한편
거점별로 물백을 설치해 급수지원에 나서고 있습니다.
