COVID-19 Resurgence as Schools Reopen

After a period of decline, the number of COVID-19 patients has experienced a substantial increase.

This is due to two factors: The resistance of the COVID-19 virus to heat, combined with the increased transmissibility of the latest variant.

Unlike other viruses, the COVID-19 virus is resistant to heat, and especially the KP.3 variant has strong transmission power, so we expect the spread to continue increasing.

After seeing zero cases in mid-May, COVID-19 infections have been steadily rising since the start of summer in July.


More than 60% of the cases reported this year involve elderly individuals, raising significant concerns regarding the effective management of this high-risk demographic.


In addition, with most schools in the province reopening this week, there are heightened concerns about the potential for transmission within dormitories.


The province is tightening quarantine measures by inspecting at-risk facilities such as nursing homes and residential facilities for people with disabilities.


The province currently has a 10-day reserve of COVID-19 treatments, consisting of approximately 1,300 doses of oral medication and around 200 doses of injectable treatments.

However, depending on the island’s COVID-19 transmission rates, the potential spread from other regions, and the availability of treatments, access to treatment could be disrupted. So the province is working hard to secure as many resources as possible.

As the number of confirmed COVID-19 cases increases, the use of treatments is also rising. However, Jeju has about 12 days' worth of treatment supplies available.

Health authorities expect that by the end of this month, the number of cases nationwide could reach the highest levels seen since 2023.


In light of the jump in COVID-19 cases, personal hygiene practices like handwashing, mask-wearing, and room ventilation are becoming even more urgent.



코로나19 재확산…학교 개학에 유행 우려


제주시내에 있는 이비인후과입니다.

한동안 주춤했던 코로나19 환자가 부쩍 늘었습니다.

코로나19 바이러스가 더위에 강한데다
최근 유행하는 변이 바이러스는 전파력이 높기 때문입니다.

다른 바이러스와 달리 코로나19 바이러스는 더위에 잘 견디고 특히 KP.3 변이 바이러스가 전파력이 강하기 때문에 앞으로도 확산세가 증가할 것으로 예상하고 있습니다.



지난 5월 중순 0명까지 감소했던
제주지역 코로나19 환자는
7월, 본격적인 여름이 시작되면서 증가세를 보이고 있습니다.


특히 올해 전체 환자 가운데 60% 이상이
65살 고령자로 확인되며
고위험군 관리에 비상이 걸렸습니다.


여기에다 이번주까지 도내 대부분의 학교가 개학을 하면서
집단 생활 중에
추가 확산되지 않을까에 대한 불안감이 높아지고 있습니다.

제주도는 우선
요양병원이나 장애인거주시설 등
감염 취약 시설을 점검하는 등 방역에 고삐를 죄고 있습니다.

또 현재까지 코로나19 치료제는
먹는 치료제 1천 300명 분, 주사 치료제 200여명 분 등
10일 가량의 여유분을 갖고 있지만
도내에서의 급속한 확산세나 다른지방의 전파력,
치료제 수급 정도에 따라
차질을 빚을 수 있는 만큼 최대한 확보에 나서고 있습니다.

코로나19 확진자가 증가하면서 치료제 사용량도 높아지고 있습니다.
하지만 제주지역 확보 물량은 약 12일분이 있습니다.

방역 당국은 이달 말쯤
전국적으로
작년 최고 유행 수준에 도달할 것으로 예상하고 있습니다.

이에따라 환기와 손씻기, 마스크 착용 등
개인 위생 수칙이
더욱 중요해지는 요즘입니다.
