An unprecedented tree die-off has occurred in Sanbangsan (산방상), a nationally designated cultural property, prompting an investigation.

According to the Jeju World Heritage Center, a group of pest infestations began last week in the chestnut tree plantation near the 350m summit of Sanbangsan.

The Center believes the recent drought and heatwave have weakened the trees, allowing pest damage to spread rapidly.

Drones will be deployed to assess the extent of damage, and tree samples will be sent to the
National Institute of Forest Science for testing.

발생해 당국이 원인 조사에 착수했습니다.

제주도세계유산본부에 따르면
지난 주부터 해발 350m 산방산 정상 부근에
서식하는 구실잣밤나무 조림지에서
집단 병해충 피해가 발생했습니다.

유산본부는
최근 가뭄과 폭염으로 수세가 약해진 상태에서
해충 피해가 빠르게 확산한 것으로 보고 있습니다.

조만간 드론을 투입해 정확한 피해 규모를
파악하고 나무 시료를 채취해
국립산림과학원에 검사를 의뢰할 예정입니다.
