Increased Hornet Activity Caution

Around 11:40 AM on the 19th, four visitors walking on a trail about 300 meters from the entrance of Saryeoni Forest were stung by hornets.


Over 20 hornets suddenly appeared under a pine tree, stinging the visitors on their heads, arms, and legs, leading them to be transported to the hospital.

Two forest trail management staff members, who were carrying out safety measures, were also stung and received first aid.

It seemed like more than 20 hornets charged at us. We couldn't fight them off, so we evacuated to a safe place, and after 119 arrived to provide first aid, the situation was managed.

The fire department removed the hornet nest in the ground under the pine tree by covering it with soil.

Jeju City has temporarily controlled access to the trail leading to the accident site, considering the high risk of additional incidents, and is monitoring to see if the hornets reappear.

The hornets suddenly emerged from the ground with a strong sense of aggression. They attack immediately as you approach, so since they are in the area, we have controlled access to ensure the safety of visitors.

More than 60% of the annual hornet nest removal dispatches and sting incidents are concentrated in July, August, and September.


This year, as the heatwave comparable to midsummer has continued into mid-September, the risk of hornet sting incidents has also increased.


Last September, there were 6 incidents, but this year, in just 19 days, there have already been 9, a 1.5 times increase.

It is better to choose bright-colored hats and clothing instead of dark colors, wear long clothing to minimize skin exposure, avoid using strong-scented cosmetics, and be cautious if you have sweet beverages or leftover food with you.

The fire department emphasized the importance of reporting any discovered hornet nests to 119, and urged particular caution when walking in sparsely populated forests or hiking in mid-mountain areas, as toxic hornet swarms can appear anywhere at any time.



늦더위에 말벌 기승…숲길 탐방객 '쏘임 사고'

다리 등이 쏘여 병원으로 이송됐습니다.

안전조치를 하던
숲길 관리 직원 2명도
벌에 쏘여 응급처치를 받았습니다.

말벌 20마리 이상은 달려든 것 같아요. 속수무책 말벌과 싸울 수 없으니까 안전한 곳으로 대피하고 119가 와서 응급처치한 다음에
현장 조치를 취했습니다.

소나무 아래 땅 속에 있는 벌집을 흙으로 덮어 제거했습니다.

제주시는
추가 사고 위험이 높다고 판단해
사고 현장 진입로 출입을 임시 통제하고
말벌이 다시 나타나는지 확인 중입니다.

땅에서 말벌이 갑자기 올라오면서 공격성이 강하더라고요. 근처만 가면 바로 쏴버리니, 말벌이 있는 상황이니까 거기가 진입로입니다. 그 길에 말벌이 나오는 상황이니 탐방객 안전을 위해 통제하고 있습니다.


1년 중 벌집 제거 출동 건수와 쏘임 사고 60% 이상은
7월과 8월에 이어 9월에 집중됐습니다.


올해는 한여름에 버금가는 폭염이
9월 중순까지 이어지면서
벌 쏘임 사고 위험도 덩달아 더 높아지고 있습니다.

실제로 지난해 9월에는 6건이 발생한 반면
올해 9월에는 불과 19일 만에 9건으로 1.5배 늘었습니다.

어두운 색보다는 밝은 색의 모자와 옷을 선택하고 피부 노출을 최소화하는 긴 옷차림이 좋습니다. 또한 향이 강한 화장품 사용을 자제하고 단 음료나 먹고 남은 음식물을 소지했을 때에도 주의가 필요합니다.

각별히 주의해달라고 강조했습니다.
