Nobel Prize Highlights Jeju April 3rd Incident

After the news of Han Kang winning the Nobel Prize in Literature, bookstores saw a rush of people trying to buy her books, and stock quickly ran out.

Among them, her latest work We Do Not Part holds special significance for the people of Jeju.


Released in 2021, We Do Not Part tells the tragic story of the Jeju April 3rd Incident from the perspectives of three women.


Han Kang wrote this novel based on stories of the Jeju April 3rd Incident that she heard from a grandmother while staying in Jeju in the 1990s.


"Snow was falling lightly. One end of the field where I stood led to a low hill, and from the ridge down to this side, thousands of black logs were planted."

With this work, Han Kang won France’s prestigious Medici Prize for Foreign Literature in November last year.


In an interview revealed by the Nobel committee, she showed a deep affection for We Do Not Part, recommending it for thorough reading.

Writing this novel was of course painful, but it was also an experience that saved me from that pain. And I kept striving to reach a state of intense love.


We Do Not Part topped the bestseller list in Korea upon its release, with the highest purchasing interest from readers in their 20s.
