Scent Evidence Police dogs in Action
In the dense bush, the police check on an elderly person who had fallen into a ditch.
After two days of searching, an 80-year-old patient with dementia, who had been reported missing on the 30th of the previous month, was finally located.
At the time of the search, a scent evidence dog was instrumental in locating the elderly person by tracking their unique scent.
A scent evidence dog gets to work in the (당오름) Dang Oreum area.
Following the trainer's commands, the dog ventures fearlessly into the forest and begins sniffing around different sections of the sprawling woodland.
An ongoing training exercise replicates the real-life scenario of locating a lost hiker using scent-tracking techniques.

This dog is a police dog. It does not bite or harm people.
Before long, the dog stumbles upon a person concealed within the depths of the forest and barks loudly, alerting others of the individual's location.
Unlike drug or explosive detection dogs, scent evidence dogs specialize in detecting human scent.
In addition to tracking bodies or suspects in major cases, they are also tasked with finding missing persons.
There are a total of 29 scent evidence dogs belonging to the National Police Agency.
Currently, the Jeju Police Agency has two canine officers: Diablo and Fernando.
Due to their remarkable sense of smell, these police dogs are effective in search and rescue missions, even in areas where drones or humans have trouble gaining access. On average, they are deployed in at least 12 cases a year.

In large fields or areas where people cannot be seen with the naked eye, these dogs, with their sense of smell that is over 10,000 times more sensitive than humans, provide great assistance in missing persons cases.
These skilled police dogs work hard to aid in search and rescue operations. Their dutiful service is sure to be a lifesaver for many more people in need.
'냄새로 추적' 경찰 체취증거견
무성한 수풀 사이 고랑에 빠져있는 어르신의 상태를
경찰이 확인합니다.
지난달 30일 실종신고가 접수된
80대 치매 어르신을
수색 이틀 만에 발견한 현장입니다.
당시 이 어르신을 찾은 주역은
사람의 냄새를 추적하는 체취증거견이었습니다.
체취증거견이 오름 일대에 등장했습니다.
훈련사의 지시에 따라 거침없이 숲으로 달려가고,
넓은 숲 속 곳곳을 다니며 냄새를 맡기 시작합니다.
길을 잃은 탐방객을 냄새로
수색하는 상황을 가장한 훈련이 한창입니다.

이 개는 경찰견입니다. 사람을 물거나 해치지 않습니다.
이내 숲에 숨어있던 사람을 찾아내고,
큰 소리로 짖어 위치를 알립니다.
체취증거견은
마약이나 폭발물 탐지견과 달리
사람의 체취를 맡는 데에 특화돼 있습니다.
이에 따라 강력 사건의 변사체나
용의자를 찾는 것 뿐만 아니라
실종자 수색 임무도 맡고 있습니다.
전국 경찰청 소속 체취증거견은 모두 29마리.
현재 제주경찰청에서는
디아블로와 페르난도 2마리가 운용되고 있습니다.
특히 장애물이 많아
드론이나 사람이 접근하기 어려운 곳에서도
뛰어난 후각을 이용해
효과적으로 수색과 인명구조 작업이 가능하다보니
한 해 평균 12건 넘게 현장에 투입되고 있습니다.

드넓은 들판이나 사람이 육안으로 보이지 않는 곳에서 이 견이 가진 인간의 1만 배 이상의 후각을 이용해서 (수색이 가능해) 실종사건 현장에서 큰 도움이 되고 있습니다.
