It has been revealed that over 2,000 foreigners who entered Jeju visa-free last year are currently overstaying illegally.

According to audit materials provided by Representative Lee Man-hee(이만희) of the People Power Party, more than 2,200 foreigners were found to have overstayed their visa-free entry to Jeju last year.

The visa-free entry system was first introduced in 2002 but was temporarily suspended due to COVID-19 before being reinstated in 2022.

Representative Lee emphasized that illegal overstays can lead to secondary crimes, including drug-related incidents.

지난해 제주에 무비자로 입국한 외국인 가운데
2천 명 이상이 불법 체류 중인 것으로 나타났습니다.

국민의힘 이만희 의원의 국감 자료에 따르면
제주에 무비자 입국 뒤, 불법체류 중인 외국인은
지난해만 2천 2백여 명으로 파악됐습니다.

외국인 무비자 입국 제도는 지난 2002년 도입된 이후
코로나 여파로 일시 중단했다가 2022년 재개됐습니다.

이 의원은 불법체류는 마약 사건을 비롯한
2차 범죄로 이어질 수 있는 만큼
차단 대책을 강화해야 한다고 강조했습니다.
