Efforts are underway to capture rabbits on Beomseom(범섬) Island, a natural reserve where they have been designated a harmful species for damaging vegetation.

Since July, the Jeju World Heritage Headquarters has captured 27 rabbits and collected four carcasses.

These rabbits are believed to have been introduced in the 1950s, once reaching a population of 70.

Captured rabbits are relocated to an ecological park, with plans to finish the capture project by year’s end and restore the vegetation.

천연보호구역 범섬 식생 훼손 '토끼' 포획


천연보호구역 범섬에서 식생을 훼손해 '위해 생물'로 지정된 '토끼' 포획 작업이 진행됐습니다.

제주세계유산본부는 지난 7월부터 범섬에 서식하는
토끼 27마리를 생포하고 사체 4마리를 수거했습니다.

토끼는 1950년대 섬에 살던 주민들이 들인 것으로 추정되며 한 때 개체수가 70마리까지 늘었습니다.

세계유산본부는 생포한 토끼는 자연생태공원으로 옮기고 연말까지 포획 작업을 마무리한 뒤
식생 복원 계획도 수립할 예정입니다.
