Jeju has been selected to host next year’s World Environment Day event, marking the first time in 28 years that the event will be held in South Korea.

According to Jeju Province, this decision followed various screenings and evaluations after the province submitted a bid to the Ministry of Environment in August.

This will be the first World Environment Day event held in South Korea since Seoul hosted it in 1997.

The Ministry of Environment, co-hosting the event with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), noted that Jeju received high marks for being the first in Korea to introduce a deposit system for disposable cups and for establishing the 2040 Plastic-Free Jeju vision.

28년 만에 우리나라에서 열리는
내년 세계 환경의 날 행사 개최지로 제주가 최종 확정됐습니다.

제주특별자치도에 따르면
지난 8월 환경부에 유치를 신청한 이후
각종 심사와 평가를 거쳐 이같이 결정됐습니다.

세계 환경의 날 행사가 우리나라에서 열리기는
지난 1997년 서울 이후 28년만입니다.


이번 행사를 공동 주최하는 환경부와 유엔환경계획은
제주가 대한민국 최초로 일회용컵 보증금제를 도입하고
2040 플라스틱 제로 제주 비전을 수립한 점에서
높은 평가를 내렸다고 밝혔습니다.
