Reopening of Kim Young-gap Gallery

The Kim Young-gap Gallery (두모악) Dumoaak, which closed last July due to increasing operational difficulties.


With two simultaneous exhibitions ahead of the 20th anniversary of the late artist Kim Young-gap next year, the gallery has reopened.


Introducing "Lost (이어도) Ieodo," a selection of 27 pieces from Kim Young-gap's "Ieodo as I See It" series.

The exhibition fills Kim's distinctive long frames with landscapes of Jeju's oreum and fields.


The other exhibition, "(마라도) Marado," reveals 33 previously unknown black-and-white photos capturing scenes of island residents and landscapes that the artist documented during his stay on Marado.

I felt that Marado, as well as the mid-mountain region and oreum of Jeju, are changing rapidly. I thought it would be good to show both in black-and-white and in color to reflect this theme.

After a difficult four-month hiatus, the gallery has reopened, but its financial situation remains challenging.


As a leading tourist spot in Jeju, promoting oreum to a national audience, the gallery has seen over 1.2 million cumulative visitors and was listed among Korea's top 100 tourist destinations.

Visitor numbers have dropped to a quarter of pre-COVID-19 levels, creating uncertainty due to changing tourism trends.

Another ongoing issue is the storage of over 500 exhibited works and tens of thousands of film cuts that have not yet been digitally restored.

Mr. Kim Young-gap passionately documented Jeju's unique essence, leaving behind a record of its beauty. How to preserve this space going forward is something we must carefully consider.

These two exhibitions, showcasing selected works by the late Kim Young-gap, capturing Jeju's landscape and spirit, will be held at the Kim Young-gap Gallery Dumoaak until February 22 next year.




다시 문 여는 김영갑갤러리


가중되는 운영난으로
지난 7월 문을 닫은 김영갑갤러리두모악.

내년 故김영갑 작가의 작고 20주기를 앞두고
두개의 전시를
동시에 선보이며 다시 문을 열었습니다.

김영갑 작가의
'내가 본 이어도' 시리즈 가운데
27점을 선별해 소개하는 '잃어버린 이어도'

작가의 대표적인 스타일로 꼽히는
기다란 프레임에
제주의 오름과 들판의 풍경을 가득 채워냈습니다.


다른 한편에 마련된 전시 '마라도'

작가가 마라도에 머물며
섬 주민들의 모습과 풍경 등을 담아낸
그동안 잘 알려지지 않았던
33점의 흑백사진이 공개됐습니다.

마라도도 마찬가지고 제주의 중산간이나 오름들도
정말 빠르게 변화하고 있다고 생각했습니다. 그래서 그 주제를 같이 하는 게 좋겠다는 생각으로
흑백과 특히 컬러로 같이 보여주면 좋을 것 같아서….

4개월 간의 휴관을 끝내고
어렵사리 다시 문을 열었지만
갤러리의 사정은
여전히 녹록지 않습니다.


제주의 오름을 전국적으로 알리며
누적 방문객 120만 명,
정부의 한국관광 100선에 오를 만큼
제주를 대표하는 관광지 가운데 하나였지만

코로나 이후 관람객은
이전의 4분의 1 수준으로 급감했고
관광 트렌드의 변화 등으로
지속적인 운영을 장담할 수 없는 상황입니다.

또 갤러리에 전시됐던 500여 점의 작품과
아직 디지털 복원을 하지 못한
수만 컷의 필름 보관도 여전히 문제입니다.

김영갑 선생님이 정말 치열하게 제주를 정말 제주다움을 기록하고 그거를 남기고 돌아가셨거든요. 앞으로 이 공간을 어떻게 지켜야 될 건지 (고민)하는 게….
