Crackdown on Non-standard Mandarin Distribution

Local police carefully inspect the oranges sorted by size in the container boxes.


In response to the mandarin orange shipping season, they are inspecting non-standard mandarin orange distribution activities.

They randomly pick a few oranges from the boxes and measure the sugar content using a sugar content meter.

As you can see, it shows a sugar content of 10 Brix, and since anything above 8.5 Brix is considered normal, we believe there is no issue here.


In the past four years, excluding 2022, there have been a total of 56 cases of non-standard mandarin orange distribution detected by the Jeju Provincial Police.

Among these, 48 cases were due to the distribution of non-standard mandarin oranges, with the amount detected exceeding 23 tons.

Additionally, there have been cases where unripe fruits were forced to ripen using chemicals or where quality inspections were not adequately conducted.


This year, frequent rain and high temperatures have led to a decrease in yield, with damages such as cracked skin, further reducing production.


With reduced production, prices are expected to rise compared to last year, but quality control is key to maintaining favorable prices.


To prevent a general price decline due to the distribution of non-standard mandarins in the early shipping season, local police are intensifying their crackdown on non-standard mandarin distribution.


Through inspections of orchards and sorting facilities, they aim to prevent the distribution of mandarins that lack commercial value, such as those with low sugar content.


They also plan to verify products directly in wholesale markets, including Seoul’s (가락동) Garak-dong Agricultural Market and other metropolitan areas, to identify distributors of non-standard mandarins.

With the ordinance amendment, as long as the sugar content standard is met regardless of size, we will focus on that in our inspections. If non-standard mandarins are distributed, the price of mandarins will fall, which ultimately harms mandarin farmers, so we plan to respond actively.

Along with this, they plan to strengthen patrols at major checkpoints on local roads to crack down on false labeling of the fruit’s origin.

박스에서 무작위로 몇 개를 골라내고
당도측정기를 이용해 당도를 확인합니다.

지금도 보시면 (당도가) 10 브릭스가 나오는 걸로 봐서 8.5 브릭스 이상이면 정상이기 때문에 문제가 없는 것으로 판단됩니다.



2022년을 제외한
최근 4년 사이
제주자치경찰이 적발한
상품외 감귤 유통 건수는 모두 56건.

규격에 맞지 않는 등
상품 외 감귤을 출하한 경우가 48건으로 가장 많았는데,
적발된 양은 23톤을 넘습니다.

이 외에도 약품 등을 이용해
덜 익은 열매를 강제 착색하거나
품질검사를 제대로 하지 않은 경우도 적지 않습니다.


특히 올해는
잦은 비와 높은 기온으로 인해 착과량이 줄어들고,
껍질이 터지는 열과 피해가 발생하면서 생산량이 줄어든 상황.

생산량이 줄어들면서
가격은 지난해보다 오를 것으로 전망되고 있지만,
가격 호조세를 이어가기 위해서는
품질 관리가 관건입니다.

출하 초기 상품외 감귤이 유통되면,
이후 전반적인 가격 하락으로 이어질 수 있는 만큼
자치경찰이
상품외 감귤 유통 행위 집중 단속에 나섭니다.

도내 과수원과 선과장 점검을 통해
당도 미달 등
상품성이 떨어지는 감귤 유통을 차단하고,

서울 가락동 농산물시장과
인천 등 수도권 도매시장에서도
직접 상품을 확인해
상품외 감귤 유통 업체를 적발할 계획입니다.

조례가 개정되면서 이제 크기와 상관없이 당도 기준을 넘으면 되기 때문에 저희가 그 부분에 주안점을 두고 점검을 할 거고요. 상품 외 감귤이 유통되게 되면 감귤 값이 하락하고 결국에는 감귤 농가들이 피해를 입기 때문에 적극적으로 대응할 계획입니다.
