JNU College of Medicine in Upheaval

This is Jeju National University’s College of Medicine.

The hallways and lecture rooms here are completely deserted.


Most of the school’s first- and second-year students have applied for leave.

More than 210 medical students have requested a leave of absence, including about 40 first-year students.


Last month, the school implemented a temporary suspension of leave approvals, affecting approximately 200 students. That’s about 97% of the total number of students who applied.


However, in late September, the government changed its stance, allowing universities to autonomously decide on medical students’ leave approvals.


If leave approvals are granted, there are concerns about the financial impact on the school.


If JNU approves leave for these 210 students, it may have to either refund or defer over 500 million won in tuition for their return semester.

Since tuition is a key revenue source for the university and medical school tuition is relatively high, refunds or deferments could put a financial squeeze on the school.

Next semester's administrative process is also under strain.


In 2025, the intake for JNU’s College of Medicine will increase by 30 students, for a total of 70.
If a large number of first-year students who are on leave decide to return next year, that could mean classes of more than 100 students. However, administrators have yet to work out a concrete plan to address this possibility.


As it stands, the island’s college of medicine will face significant upheaval next year, as student attendance, financial constraints, and administrative concerns all take center stage.

학교 측은
한 달 전만 해도
휴학 신청자의 97%인 200여 명의 휴학 승인을 보류했습니다.

하지만 지난 달 말,
정부가
의대생 휴학 승인 여부를
대학 자율에 맡기도록 입장을 바꾸면서 상황은 달라졌습니다.

의대생들의 휴학을 승인하면서
학교 재정에도 타격이 우려되고 있습니다.

내년 학기 운영에도 비상이 걸렸습니다.
