A Student Musical Banning Teenage Drug Issues


(해성) Haesung, a student, struggles to fit in with friends.
In his loneliness, Haesung unexpectedly befriends (은서) Eunseo.
Through Eunseo, he meets other peers.
Although they each face different issues, such as loneliness, academic pressure, and appearance insecurities, they come together for the same reason:
To obtain a magical jelly that seems to make their worries disappear instantly.

An original musical depicting teenagers’ experiences with drugs and their adverse effects has been staged.


Members of (영주) Youngju High School’s performance club wrote the script themselves, presenting episodes about drug-related issues faced by students.

Many might think that the topic of drugs doesn’t feel relatable to them. I hope this raises more awareness about the issue.

As the performance nears its end, the magical jelly that once seemed to relieve their pain is revealed to be an illusion, ultimately harming their minds and bodies.

Given the nature of theater, we utilized metaphors, symbols, and allegories. Instead of directly referencing drugs, we focused on representing them symbolically through ‘jelly.’

The message delivered by characters who resemble real-life classmates resonated strongly with the peers sitting in the audience.

Topics like academics or appearance are things every student worries about at some point. Such concerns can lead to struggles, and if they become vulnerabilities, it’s easy to see how drugs could appear tempting.

The musical "Melancholy Jelly" was created to highlight the serious social issues surrounding teenage drug use and its consequences from a youth perspective.

Successfully performed at the Seogwipo Student Culture Center Grand Theater, the show is scheduled to be staged twice more at Halla Art Hall of Jeju Halla University on the 3rd of next month.

고해성 학생은 친구들과 쉽게 어울리지 못합니다.

외로웠던 해성은 뜻밖의 친구 은서를 사귀게 됩니다.

은서를 통해 다른 또래 친구들도 알게 됩니다.

외로움, 학업 스트레스로 인한 중압감 , 외모 컴플렉스까지
서로 다른 고민을 갖고 있지만 그들이 함께 모인 이유는 같습니다.

고민들을 한 순간에 잊게 해주는 마법같은 젤리를 얻기 위해섭니다.

청소년들이 마약을 접하고 부작용을 다룬 창작 뮤지컬이 무대에 올랐습니다.

영주고 공연제작 동아리 학생들이
직접 작성한 극본을 바탕으로 마약류와 관련해 학생들이 겪는 다양한 에피소드를 그려냈습니다.

마약이라는 이야기 자체가 실제로 약간 자신들한테는 와닿지 않을 거라고 많이 생각하잖아요. 이런 경각심을 좀 더 많이 얻었으면 하고…

공연이 끝나갈 쯤 고통에서 벗어나는 마법 같은 젤리가 결국 자신들의 몸과 정신마져 병들게 하는 허상이었음을 깨닳습니다.

연극이라는 장르의 특성상 은유나 비유 상징 이런 것을 좀 많이 활용해서 마약 진짜 이름을 직접적으로 표현하기 보다는 젤리라는 상징을 사용해서 표현을 좀 중점적으로 했었고요.



실제 교실에서 만날 것 같은 친구들이 전하는 메시지는
관람석에 앉아있던 또래 친구들에게 더욱 분명하게 들립니다.

학업이나 외모 같은 것도 전부 다 학생들이라면 한 번쯤 고민해봤을 부분이고 그런 고민이 어려움으로 이어질 수도 있고 그것이
약점이 된다면 충분히 마약 같은 것에 매력을 느끼고 빠져들 수도 있지 않을까라는 생각을 하게 됐습니다.



최근 심각한 사회 문제로 대두된 청소년 마약 문제와 부작용 등을
청소년들의 시각으로 전달하기 위해 만들어진 뮤지컬 '멜랑콜리 젤리'

서귀포학생문화원 대극장에서 성공적으로 선보인 공연은
다음달 3일 제주한라대 한라아트홀에서 2차례 더
무대에 올려질 예정입니다.
