Exploring Jeju Women's Legacy

Jeju, known as the birthplace of the (갓) gat,the traditional Korean hat, produced during the Joseon Dynasty.


Tools used to produce yangtae (horsehair hat brims), tanggeon (headbands), and manggeon (hair ties) remain as precious relics of Jeju.


Young women were primarily responsible for crafting goods using horsehair, a Jeju specialty.
Since these goods were distributed nationwide, the task was mainly undertaken by women in coastal areas.


In contrast, agriculture was the primary livelihood in Jeju’s mountain villages.

An exhibition showcasing the lives and tools of women from Jeju’s mountain and coastal villages is underway.
This special exhibition, titled "Mountain Villages and Coastal Villages: The Lives of Jeju Young Ladies", has been organized by the Jeju (설문대) Seolmundae Women’s Culture Center.

In the case of coastal villages, livelihoods related to the sea are prominently displayed due to their proximity to the ocean. In mountain villages, agricultural livelihoods dominate because of the mountainous terrain. This is why we planned this comparative exhibition.

Due to their differing geographical characteristics, life in coastal and mountain villages also varied.
Each community produced goods suited to its environment and exchanged them to meet mutual needs.
This exhibition divides the diverse lives of Jeju’s villages into six themes based on their geographical features.


More than 20 artifacts, photos, and videos related to women’s lives are on display, sourced from the Seolmundae Women’s Culture Center’s collection.


This exhibition, which offers a glimpse into Jeju’s traditional folk life and the past lives of Jeju women, will run until March 2nd of next year.



'산간마을·해안마을 여성들의 삶' 조명 특별전


조선시대 모자 갓을 생산하는 본 고장이었던 제주.

양태와 탕건, 망건을 제작했던 기구가
소중한 제주의
유물로 남아있습니다.

제주 특산품인 말총을 활용한 물건을 만드는 일은
젊은 여성들의 몫이었습니다.

물건이 전국적으로 퍼져나갔기 때문에
주로 해안지역 여성들이 이같은 일을 했습니다.

반면 제주 산간지역에서는 농사가 주로 이뤄졌습니다.

곡물의 쭉정이를 골라냈던 기구가 전시돼 있습니다.

선보이는 전시가 열리고 있습니다.

제주설문대여성문화센터에서 마련한 특별기획전
'산간마을, 해안마을 : 제주 큰애기들의 삶'입니다.

해안마을의 경우 바다가 가깝기 때문에 물질과 관련된 생업의 모습을 많이 보이고 있고, 산간마을의 경우 산간지역이기 때문에 농사와 관련된 생업의 모습을 주로 보이고 있어서 비교하는 전시를 기획하게 되었습니다.


지리적 특성이 달랐던 해안과 산간마을은
삶의 모습도 달랐습니다.

각자 환경에 맞는 것들을 만들어내고
서로 부족한 것을 주고받으며 살아왔습니다.

이번 전시는
지리적 특성에 따라 다양한 모습을 보이는
제주 마을의 삶을 6개의 주제로 나눠 구성하고 있습니다.

여성들의 삶을 주제로
설문대여성문화센터에서 소장하고 있는
유물과 사진, 영상 등 20여 점을 선보이고 있습니다.

제주 민속의 모습을 만나보고
과거 제주 여성의 삶을 돌아볼 수 있는
이번 전시는 내년 3월 2일까지 이어질 예정입니다.
