Political Turmoil Sends Jeju Tourism Into Crisis


Last week’s state of emergency declaration and a failed vote to impeach the president has prompted major countries to issue travel warnings for Korea.


As a result, the Jeju tourism industry is now experiencing ripple effects.
In particular, travel agencies are facing the reality of cancellations that were once only a concern.


A local inbound travel agency specializing in attracting foreign tourists to Korea has reported individual traveler cancellations since the state of emergency began.

On average, we handle five FITs (Free Independent Travelers) per week, but since the emergency-related reports started gaining traction, that number has decreased by 2-3.

Outbound travel agencies, which primarily focus on sending Korean tourists abroad, are also under pressure.

The number of inquiries about the feasibility of traveling abroad is rising, although no cancellations have been directly attributed to the state of emergency at this time.

There is growing concern that if the nation’s political turmoil continues into next year, mass cancellations could occur, starting with future bookings.

Remember when President Park Geun-hye was impeached? Back then, all outbound trips were either postponed or canceled. If this situation drags on, the impact will be significant. Most customers have said they'll cancel if the instability continues until December.


The Jeju Tourism Association has reported two cases of cancellations in both travel and accommodation businesses due to the state of emergency.

There have been cases of accommodation cancellations from countries like China and Taiwan, which are affecting Jeju as well. We're closely monitoring the situation to ensure the impact doesn't extend into the year-end peak season or the Lunar New Year holidays next year.

As of now, the number of tourists visiting Jeju has reached 13 million, marking a 3.3% increase compared to the same period last year.


While domestic tourists decreased by 6.4%, the number of foreign tourists nearly tripled, compensating for the decline.


However, the current political turmoil and growing economic concern and anxiety could discourage both domestic and foreign tourism. This will only deepen the struggles of Jeju's tourism industry, which is reliant on year-end business.

특히 여행사를 중심으로
우려했던 예약 취소가 현실화되고 있습니다.

주로 외국인의 국내 여행을 유치하는
도내 한 인바운드 여행사는
계엄 사태 이후
개별 여행객의 예약 취소가 발생하고 있습니다.

평균적으로 저희가 일주일에 5개 FIT(개별 여행객)가 들어오는데 요즘은 (비상계엄 관련) 보도가 많이 되면서 2~3개가 줄어들었습니다.


한국인의 해외여행을 주력으로 하는
아웃바운드 여행업계도 비상이 걸리긴 마찬가지입니다.

아직 계엄 사태로 인한 취소는 없지만
여행 가능 여부를 묻는 문의가 이어지고 있습니다.

국정 혼란이 장기화될 경우에는
내년 예약 건부터
줄취소가 발생할 수 있다는 우려가 커지고 있습니다.

박근혜 대통령 때 탄핵했었잖아요. 그때 나가는 게 전부 다 보류됐었어요 연기되거나. 여파가 상당히 커질 거예요 아마 이게 장기화되면.
12월까지 그게(정세 안정) 안 되면 취소하겠다는 내용들이에요 거의.

회원사를 대상으로
계엄 사태에 따른 피해 상황을 파악한 결과
여행과 숙박업체에서 각 2건의 예약 취소 사례가 확인됐습니다.

중국이나 대만 국가에서는 숙박 예약을 취소하는 사례가 발생하는 등 제주까지 영향을 미치고 있습니다. 연말 특수 시즌과 내년 춘절 연휴까지 여파가 미치지 않게끔 저희 관광업계에서도 촉각을 곤두세우고…


올들어 현재까지
제주를 찾을 관광객은 1천300만명으로
지난해 같은 기간보다 3.3% 늘었습니다.

내국인 관광객이 6.4% 감소한 반면
외국인이 3배 가까이 증가하며
내국인의 빈 자리를 채우고 있습니다.

하지만 이번 계엄 사태로
외국인은 물론 내국인 관광객들 또한
경제 위축과 불안 심리로
여행 자제 분위기가 확산될 수 있어
연말 특수를 기대했던 제주관광의 시름이 깊어지고 있습니다.
