"Han Kang Contributed to Sharing Jeju 4.3 Story"

Jeju Governor Oh Young-hun (오영훈) sent a congratulatory message to author Han Kang (한강) for winning the Nobel Prize in Literature, praising her novel “I Do Not Bid Farewell” for beautifully conveying the pain and reconciliation of the Jeju 4.3 Incident.

He expressed heartfelt congratulations on behalf of the 700,000 residents of Jeju, noting that Han Kang's extraordinary work has greatly increased both domestic and international attention to the Jeju 4.3 tragedy.

He highlighted that the Jeju 4.3 incident, as reflected in the author’s writing, has become an enduring part of collective memory and history. He expressed hope that Han Kang's portrayal of Jeju will continue to resonate with many more people.

To celebrate Han Kang's Nobel win, Jeju Island has displayed congratulatory messages and banners on electronic billboards at major facilities, including Jeju International Airport.
