Surge in Flu Cases: Highest Spike in Years

patients wearing masks keep arriving.
They visit the clinic with symptoms such as coughing or high fever.
Many of them are diagnosed with the flu after testing.

When I woke up this morning, my throat hurt, I had a fever, body aches, and felt like I was catching a cold, so I came here.

Due to the ongoing cold weather, flu cases have sharply increased across the nation.

According to the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency (KDCA), as of last week, the number of flu patients reporting sudden fever above 38°C, cough, or sore throat was 73.9 per 1,000 outpatient visits.

This is the highest number in eight years since hitting a peak of 86.2 in 2016.


Similarly, in Jeju, flu cases have exceeded national figures since the second week of December.
Last week, the flu patient rate soared to 108.4 per 1,000 outpatients, about 1.7 times higher than the previous week.


Flu cases are increasing across all age groups,
with a sharp rise particularly in children and teenagers aged 7 to 18.


As flu viruses become more active in colder temperatures,
preventative measures like frequent handwashing are crucial.

Flu patients with symptoms such as sore throat, headache, fever, and progressing to systemic muscle aches, coughing, and sputum are increasing exponentially.
We urge people with weaker respiratory systems to wear masks when going out and strictly maintain personal hygiene, such as handwashing.


With the rapid spread of the flu expected to continue until spring, health authorities urge high-risk groups, such as the elderly and children, to get vaccinated promptly, as complications like pneumonia may arise.

아침에 일어났는데 목도 아프고 열나고 몸살기 있고 감기 (기운이) 있는 것 같아서 왔습니다.

최근 추운 날씨가 이어지면서
전국적으로 독감 환자가 크게 늘고 있습니다.


질병관리청에 따르면
38도 이상의 갑작스러운 발열과 기침,
인후통 등을 호소하는 독감 환자는
지난주 기준 외래 환자 1천명 당 73.9명.

2016년 86.2명으로 정점을 찍은 이후 8년 만에 가장 많이 발생했습니다.


제주 지역 역시 12월 둘째 주부터 전국 수치를 웃돌기 시작하더니

지난주에는 독감 환자가
외래환자 1천 명 당 108.4명까지 치솟으며,
전주보다 1.7배 가량 늘었습니다.



모든 연령층에서
전체적으로 독감 환자가 증가세를 보이고 있는데,

특히 7살에서 18살 사이
어린이와 청소년층 환자들이 급격히 늘어나고 있습니다.

기온이 떨어지면
독감 바이러스의 활동이 더욱 활발해는 만큼

독감 예방을 위해서는
손 씻기 등 개인 위생 수칙을 준수하는 것이 우선입니다.

인후통과 두통, 발열 그리고 점차적으로 전신 근육통과 기침, 가래 등의 호흡기 증상으로 발전하는 독감 환자가 기하급수적으로 늘고 있습니다.
호흡기가 약하신 분들은 마스크 착용을 하고 외출하시고요. 손 씻기 등의 개인위생을 철저히 해 주시기를 당부드리겠습니다.

최근 독감이 급격히 확산하면서
봄까지 유행이 이어질 것으로 보이는 가운데

노인과 어린이 등 고위험군의 경우
폐렴 등 합병증으로 이어질 수 있는 만큼
서둘러 예방접종을 해야 한다고 보건당국은 당부했습니다.
