Jeju Cabbage Exports Resume After 5 Years


Workers are busy sorting cabbages.
Well-trimmed cabbages are being packed into boxes and loaded into cargo containers for export.


Jeju cabbage exports, which had halted for five years due to the COVID-19 pandemic, have restarted.
This resumption is attributed to both the cabbage’s exceptional sweetness and a robust production traceability system that tracks data from planting to harvest.

I thought exports would resume quickly after COVID ended, but it took some time. I think factors like the production traceability system that satisfies Japan and the excellence of Jeju cabbages played a role in this.

This resumption after 5 years involves 24 local farms, with a target of exporting about 1,000 tons by April.


Exports should stabilize cabbage supply, resolving issues like overproduction and wasteful disposal in production areas.

Right now, export contracts yield 40% less profit compared to domestic markets. So why are we doing this? For long-term plans?when there’s a surplus of spring shipments, this helps distribute them more evenly.

Jeju’s agricultural sector plans to leverage renewed exports to Japan as a base for diversifying into other international markets and securing ongoing export growth for Jeju agricultural goods.

We need to move toward the global market. So, we started with Japan and Taiwan, the closest markets. Using this as an opportunity, we aim to export even larger quantities.

However, the issue of double logistics costs incurred when transporting to other regions like Busan is a key challenge that must be addressed to further expand the export of Jeju’s agricultural products.

제주산 양배추 수출길이 5년만에 재개됐습니다.

제주산 양배추의 우수한 단맛뿐 아니라
파종에서부터 수확까지의 정보가 담긴 생산이력제가
수출 재개의
한몫을 하고 있습니다.

코로나 끝나면 금방 재개될 줄 알았는데 좀 걸린 것 같습니다.
여러 가지 일본에서 만족할 만한 생산이력제라든지 저희 제주 양배추 농산물의 우수성 이런 것들이 작용해서 아마 다시...



이번 5년 만의 재개에는
지역의 24개 농가가 참여하고
4월까지 1천톤 내외의 수출을 목표로 하고 있습니다.

특히 과잉생산과 산지폐기 등이 빈번한 상황에
양배추 수급을
안정적으로 조절하는 등의
긍정적 효과가 기대되고 있습니다.

이제 세계로 나가야 되지 않겠느냐. 그래서 제일 가까운 일본, 대만 쪽으로 먼저 선정을 해서 수출을 하게 됐는데 이걸 기회로 해서 더 많은 물량이 나갈 수 있도록...

다만 부산 등
다른 지역으로 운송하며 발생하는 이중물류비에 대해서는
제주산 농산물의
수출 확대를 위해 해결해야할 과제로 꼽힙니다.
