Jeju Fire Festival Returns with 'Digital Fire Lighting'


After a two-year break, the Jeju Fire Festival?an event previously criticized for its potential wildfire risks and negative environmental impact?is set to return.

The Jeju City government announced their plans for this year's festival at an official briefing.


This year’s festival will run from March 14 to 16 at its usual location, Saebyeol Oreum volcanic cone in Aewol-eup.


Discussions with a citizen planning group and a review by advisory committees resulted in basic plans that exclude fire lighting from the festival. Instead, the festival will promote its traditional fire theme in alternative ways.


Replacing actual wildfires, "digital fire lighting" will use media art with lights and visual effects to symbolize fire.


The festival will offer new activities such as distributing hope saplings, guided volcanic cone environmental?or plogging?programs focused on nature's sounds, sunset and night trekking, and a national Jeju folk game competition.

To preserve the festival's traditions, fire-related content will be included. Events like the torch parade and daljip burning will use flames kindled from ceremonial fire. However, instead of setting fire to the entire oreum, we plan to incorporate media content, laser lighting, and media art.


The revived festival will begin with a fire kindling ceremony at (삼성혈) Samseonghyeol, followed by a fire relay performance involving 1,000 citizens. The goal is to uphold the festival’s identity while transforming it into a participatory event.

As 2025 marks the first year of change for the Jeju Fire Festival, we hope it becomes a symbol of hope and unity for the region. We ask for strong interest and support from residents.


However, the decision to retain events like the torch parade, daljip (moon house) burning, and fireworks?despite past emphasis on a fireless, eco-friendly festival?has reignited controversy.


A proposed local ordinance in Aewol-eup that conditionally permits fire lighting at the volcanic cone is currently pending a Provincial Council vote, after being sent back for review. Meanwhile, the debate surrounding the festival continues.

제주들불축제가 2년 만에 재개됩니다.

제주시는 공식 브리핑을 통해
올해 들불축제와 관련한 구체적인 계획을 밝혔습니다.

이번 축제는
오는 3월 14일부터 16일까지
기존 축제 장소인
애월읍 새별오름 일대에서 개최됩니다.

시민기획단 논의 결과와 자문단 검토 과정 등을 거친
기본계획에 따라
핵심 콘텐츠인 '불 놓기'는 하지 않되
'불'을 테마로
전통을 유지하기로 했습니다.

들불이 빠진 빈 자리는
빛과 조명 등 미디어아트로
불을 형상화 해
일명 디지털 불놓기 방식으로 진행됩니다.

또 축제기간에
새희망 묘목 나눠주기,
자연의 소리를 들으며 해설가와 함께 하는 오름 플로깅,
일몰 시간과 야간 트래킹,
제주 민속놀이 전국대회 등
새로운 프로그램을 마련하고 있습니다.

축제 전통성 차원에서 (불 관련 콘텐츠를) 운영할 예정입니다.
그래서 채화된 불씨로 달집태우기 등의 횃불 대행진 행사들은 개최하면서 오름 전면에 불 놓던 거를 여러 가지 미디어 콘텐츠 기술,
레이저 조명이라든지 미디어아트를 복합해서 연출을 하겠다는 겁니다.


이번에 재개되는 들불축제는
삼성혈에서의
불씨 채화를 시작으로
1천여 명의 시민들이 참여하는 불씨 전달 퍼포먼스 등을 통해
축제의 정체성을 이어가고
시민참여 축제로 만들어가겠다는게 제주시의 구상입니다.

2025년 제주들불축제는 새로운 변화를 시도하는 첫 해인 만큼 제주를 대표하는 희망과 화합의 장이 될 수 있도록 도민 여러분의 많은 관심과 성원을 부탁드립니다.

하지만 논의 과정 등을 통해
'불'없는 친환경 생태 축제를 계속 강조해왔던 것과는 달리
횃불 대행진과
달집 태우기, 불꽃쇼 등은
그대로 유지하면서 논란을 낳고 있습니다.

여기에다 애월읍 일부 주민들이
오름 불 놓기를 조건부로 명문화한 주민 발의 조례가
제주도의 재의 요구로
도의회의 표결을 남겨두고 있어
들불축제와 관련한 논란의 불씨는 여전히 남아 있습니다.
