New Rules on Power Banks Aboard Flights

Starting next month, charging power banks and storing them in overhead compartments will be prohibited on flights.

According to the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, and Transport's new standards for strengthening in-flight safety management, when boarding an aircraft, power banks and electronic cigarettes must be carried directly with the passenger or stored in the seat pocket.

Additionally, it will be prohibited to charge power banks onboard, and storing power banks and electronic cigarettes in the overhead compartments will also be banned.

For power banks, the regulations will require them to be stored in a way that prevents the metal terminals from coming into contact with it’s surroundings, such as by using insulating tape, protective pouches, or placing them in zipper bags.

The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, and Transport will consider further regulations, including restrictions on the quantity of power banks allowed onboard, if an incident like the recent Air Busan fire, caused by a power bank, is confirmed.

보조배터리 충전과 선반 보관 등이 금지됩니다.

국토교통부가 마련한
기내 안전관리 체계 강화 표준안에 따르면
항공기를 탑승할 경우
보조배터리와 전자담배는 직접 소지하거나
좌석 주머니에 보관해야 합니다.

또 보조배터리를
항공기 내에서 직접 충전하면 안되고,
보조배터리와 전자담배를
기내 선반에 보관하는 것도 금지됩니다.

보조배터리의 경우
단자가 금속과 접촉하지 않도록
절연테이프를 붙이거나
보호형 파우치 또는
지퍼백 등에 넣어 보관하도록 규정이 강화됩니다.

국토부는
지난 에어부산 화재사고 원인이
보조배터리로 밝혀질 경우
기내 반입 수량 제한 등
추가 규제강화 여부를 검토할 예정입니다.
