A Steller sea lion, a Grade 2 endangered marine mammal, has been spotted in the waters off Jeju. This species is rarely seen in Korea and is usually found along the east coast, making its appearance in Jeju highly unusual. Experts speculate that it may have traveled south in search of food.

A strange animal catches the eye on a coastal rock.
[Slug] Steller sea lion spotted by a fishing team
With its smooth, streamlined body, grayish-brown fur, and rounded forehead, the animal is identified as a Steller sea lion.
It raises its thick neck high, looking around, and then gracefully swims in the sea.

I initially thought it was a turtle surfacing, but as it got closer, I realized it was a Steller sea lion. I was fishing at the time, and I was both surprised and fascinated, so I kept filming it.

The Steller sea lion, a marine mammal, is classified as a Grade 2 endangered wild species.

This species mainly inhabits coastal areas from Siberia to the Bering Sea, Sakhalin, and the Kuril Islands.


In winter, they sometimes appear in Japan’s Hokkaido and along the east coast of the Korean peninsula.
Over the past decade, fewer than ten Steller sea lions have been reported in Korea, making this sighting in Jeju particularly rare.
[Slug] Second sighting since 2012, Likely came in search of food
This is only the second recorded sighting in Jeju, following one in 2012 near (비양도) Biyangdo Island.
Experts believe that the animal traveled south to Jeju in search of food.

The individual spotted near Gwantaldo Island, Chujado, appears to be in good health based on its activity and movement.
This is the first documented case of a live, active Steller sea lion in this region.

갯바위 위에 낯선 동물이 눈에 띕니다.

매끈한 유선형 몸에 회갈색 털,
둥글게 솟아오른 이마가 특징인 큰바다사자입니다.

두꺼운 목을 높게 빼며 이리저리 둘러보는가 하면
바다에 들어가 유유히 헤엄도 칩니다.
