Jeju Caught Foreign Drug Offender at Airport



At the end of last month, a foreign national was apprehended at Jeju Airport for drug smuggling.

The suspect, a Malaysian woman in her 40s, was caught bringing in 2kg of methamphetamine.
The quantity was enough for 70,000 doses and had an estimated street value of 7 billion KRW.


Authorities reported that the suspect traveled from Cambodia, transiting through Shanghai, China, before arriving in Jeju.

According to customs officials, the 2kg of meth was divided into portions and packed in specially manufactured snack bags.
It was also hidden in shoe insoles and coat pockets inside the travel bag.


The suspect is currently in custody while customs and prosecutors investigate the smuggling route, distribution network, and potential accomplices.


In 2023, a Malaysian national was also caught attempting to smuggle 12kg of meth?enough for 400,000 doses. Three drug smuggling cases were detected at the airport customs last year.

Since the end of the COVID-19 pandemic and the resumption of visa-free entry, Jeju has increasingly been exploited as a drug distribution hub.

Some smugglers use Jeju as a transit point, while others see Korea as the final drug market. If Jeju is being used as an intermediary hub, and if some of the drugs are consumed locally, it poses a significant risk.

Jeju Customs has announced plans to intensify crackdowns on drug smuggling until mid-month.



'7만 명 투약' 필로폰 2kg 밀수 외국인 '적발'


지난 달 말,
제주공항 입국장에서 외국인 마약 사범이 검거됐습니다.

말레이시아 국적 40대 외국인 여성으로
필로폰 2kg을 들여온 것으로 파악됐습니다.

7만 명이 동시 투약할 수 있는 양으로 시가 70억 원 상당입니다.

검거된 마약사범은 캄보디아에서 출발해 중국 상해를 경유해 제주에 온 것으로 알려졌습니다.


세관에 따르면
필로폰 2kg은
특수 제작한 과자 봉지에 나눠
여행용 가방에 담겨 있었고
신발 깔창이나
외투 주머니에도 숨겨져 있던 것으로
전해졌습니다.


세관은
사전 여행자 정보 시스템과 보안 검색,
정밀 수색을 통해
마약 사범을 적발했다고 설명했습니다.


피의자는 현재 구속 상태로
반입 경위와 유통 경로
공범 여부 등에 대해
세관과 검찰이 조사하고 있는 것으로 알려지고 있습니다.

지난 2023년에도 40만 명이 투약 가능한
필로폰 12kg을 반입하려던 말레이시아 국적 외국인이 검거 됐고 지난해에도 마약 밀수사범
세건이 공항 세관을 통해 적발됐습니다.

더욱이 코로나 펜데믹 종료 이후
무사증 재개 시점과 맞물려
제주가 마약 유통의 거점으로 악용되고 있습니다.

중간 경유지로 삼는 경우도 있고 한국을 최종적인 마약
소비지로 보고 유통시키는 경우도 있는데 제주가 중간 경유지로
활용되는 것과 함께 일부는 제주도내에서도 소비가 된다면
그만큼 위험해지는 거죠.

마약류 반입 사범에 대한
단속을 강화할 방침입니다.
