Starting this August, elementary, middle, and high school students will be able to ride buses for free, with no limit on the number of rides. Notably, express buses, often used by students commuting from rural areas, will also be covered under the free service.

[Slug] Free bus rides for children under 13 starting this year

Since earlier this year, children under the age of 13 in Jeju have been riding buses for free.
They can use all city buses, including airport limousine buses and express buses, without limit on the number of rides.

This free ride policy will now be expanded to include middle and high school students.
The province and the Jeju Provincial Office of Education, which have been discussing the plan to provide free bus fares for youth, officially signed an agreement confirming this expansion.

Starting in August, all youth under the age of 19 will be able to ride buses for free, anytime and anywhere.

Not just during commuting hours ? even when meeting friends or going out to hang out, students can use buses for free throughout their daily lives. This is the first policy of its kind nationwide.

The budget needed for this free bus ride initiative for youth will be mostly funded through the transportation subsidies that the Jeju Provincial Office of Education had previously provided to students commuting long distances.

Importantly, out-of-school youth ? who were previously excluded from transportation subsidies ? will also now be eligible.
Express buses will also be included in the free service coverage.

Previously, teachers had to go through a lot of administrative work to assess distances and home addresses to allocate transportation subsidies for students. Resolving this burden carries significance. It allows teachers to use that time instead to better prepare for their classes and support students.

[Slug] 250,000 residents eligible for free buses ? 36% of Jeju’s population


With the expansion to include children, seniors aged 65 and older, and now youth, the number of people eligible for free bus rides will increase to 250,000 ? about 36% of Jeju's total population.
The province and the Jeju Provincial Office of Education are working quickly to issue transportation welfare cards and revise related ordinances so that youth can access the free service.

올해부터 제주지역 13살 미만의 어린이들은 버스를 무료로 이용중입니다.

이용 횟수에 상관없이 공항 리무진 버스와 급행버스 등을
모든 시내버스를 탈 수 있습니다.

이같은 무료 정책이 중,고등학생들로 확대됩니다.

청소년 버스 요금 무료화 방안을 논의해 온
제주도와 제주도교육청이
이 같은 내용을 골자로 한 협약에 최종 합의하고 공식 발표했습니다.

이에 따라 8월부터
만 19살 이하 모든 청소년은
시관과 장소에 관계없이 무료로 버스를 이용할 수 있게 됩니다.

대부분 제주도교육청이
먼거리 통학 학생들에게 지원하던 교통비로 충당하게 됩니다.

교통비 지원 대상에서 배제됐던
학교 밖 청소년들도 혜택을 받게 됩니다.

[버스 무료 대상자 25만 명…제주 도민 36%]
어린이와 65세 이상 제주도민,
그리고 청소년까지 확대되면서
버스 무료 대상자는 25만명, 제주도민의 36%까지 늘어납니다.

제주도와 제주도교육청은
청소년들이 무료로 이용할 수 있도록
교통복지카드 발급과
조례 개정 작업을 서두르기로 했습니다.
