More than 200 postal workers are injured in traffic accidents across Korea each year. In Jeju, the risks are even greater with many of the accidents involving rental cars driven by inexperienced tourists.
KCTV Jeju and the Jeju Post Office are working together on a new initiative to prevent accidents and keep postal workers safe.

A motorcycle loaded with mail and parcels speeds through the streets.
This is Mr. Shin Seung-gwon, an 8-year veteran postal worker at Hallim Post Office.

[Slug] Average of 50 kilometers driven per day

Due to the heavy volume of deliveries, he covers an average of 50 kilometers a day on roads and alleyways.
But even for a seasoned worker like Mr. Shin, rental cars are what he prefers to avoid whenever possible.

They often perform risky maneuvers, switching lanes without signaling or braking suddenly after missing their turn.

Just recently, I nearly got into an accident because a rental car was speeding through an alley. Situations like that make you realize how important traffic safety is.

최근 같은 경우에 골목길에서 과속하는 렌트카 때문에 사고 날 뻔한 적이 있어서 그럴 때가 조금 안전 사고에 주의해야 되는 부분 같습니다.

In fact, traffic accidents are the most common type of injury suffered by postal workers and postal service employees.

Although electric vehicles are becoming more common, the majority of parcels and mail are still delivered using motorcycles.

To build a safer Jeju and prevent traffic accidents involving postal workers, KCTV Jeju and Jeju Post Office have joined forces.
Postal workers will focus on maintaining safe speeds and obeying traffic signals.

They will also monitor roads to identify areas with inadequate signage or facilities and report them to the relevant authorities.
KCTV Jeju and the Jeju Post Office are collaborating on a traffic safety awareness campaign targeting both tourists driving rental cars and local residents.

Jeju postal workers and staff will actively identify weak points in traffic safety infrastructure and quickly report any incidents to authorities to ensure their safety from traffic accidents.

"렌터카가 무서워요!"…안전 예방 '맞손'


[제주시 한림읍]
우편과 소포들을 가득 싣은 오토바이가 바쁘게 달려갑니다.

올해로 근무 8년차인 한림우체국 집배원인 신승권씨입니다.

[하루 평균 50킬로미터 주행]
쏟아지는 배달 물량에
하루 평균 50킬로미터를 도로와 골목길을 누빕니다.

하지만 배테랑급인 신씨에게도 렌터카는 가장 피하고 싶은 대상입니다.

[방향지시등 미점등 차로 변경 등 렌터카 '위협']
방향지시등도 켜지거 않고 갑자기 차로를 바꾸나
목적지를 지나치면 급제동으로 사고 위협을 느낄때가 빈번합니다.

실제 우체국 집배원을 비롯한
우정직 공무원이 가장 많이 겪는 재해가 교통사고로 나타났습니다.

[전기차 보급…상당수 이륜차 통해 우편물 배달]
최근 전기차 등이 보급되고 있지만
여전히 이륜차를 통해
소포와 우편물을 배달하는 경우가 대부분이기 때문입니다.

우정사업본부에 따르면
우체국 집배원 안전사고는
지난 2014년 315명에서 해마다 늘어나
2018년에는 745명으로 갑절 이상 늘었습니다.

특히 사고 유형을 보면
차량 교통사고가 전체 사고의 63%를 차지합니다.

교통안전에 대한 인식 제고를 위한 캠페인을 전개하기로 했습니다.
