Starting next year, U.S. citrus fruits will enter Korea duty-free, putting Jeju’s tangerine farmers on high alert. Farmers are calling for at least a temporary market separation during periods when imports overlap with domestic harvesting and distribution.

Beginning next year, U.S. mandarin citrus will be imported into Korea without tariffs.
This is because tariffs that have been gradually reduced under the Korea?U.S. Free Trade Agreement, which took effect in 2012, will be fully eliminated next year.
[Slug] Tariff removal raises fears of import surge
Until now, U.S. mandarins were subject to tariffs of up to 30 percent.
From next year, however, the price burden will disappear, raising expectations of a sharp increase in import volumes.
[Slug] 7,916 tons imported in first half, more than double last year
In fact, this year?when the tariff rate fell by 9.5 percentage points?imports reached 7,916 tons in the first half alone, more than double the total for all of last year.

U.S. mandarins are similar to (카라향) Karahyang, a late-harvest premium citrus variety.

As a result, farmers fear an immediate blow to late-season citrus varieties with overlapping shipping periods starting next year.
They warn that if imports continue to increase, the very survival of Jeju’s citrus industry could be at risk.

Farmers also say that lukewarm responses from the government and local authorities are deepening their concerns, adding that concrete countermeasures are needed.

They argue that if import volumes surge and damages materialize, the government should consider activating emergency import safeguard measures.
[Slug] ‘Practical protection needed, including shipping-season adjustments’
In particular, since the distribution period for U.S. mandarins overlaps with the shipping season for Jeju’s late-season citrus, farmers are demanding that mandarins be temporarily withheld from the market to adjust shipping schedules.
They also call for the prompt establishment of a provincial-level task force involving government authorities, farmers’ groups, and producers to develop practical countermeasures and engage in negotiations with the central government.

[내년부터 미국산 감귤류 '만다린' 무관세 수입]
내년부터 미국산 감귤류 만다린이 관세 없이 국내에 들어옵니다.
지난 2012년 발효된 한·미 자유무역협정에 따라
단계적으로 인하돼 온 관세가 내년 전면 철폐되기 때문입니다.
[관세 사라지며 수입 물량 급증 우려]
지금까지 미국산 만다린에는 최대 30%의 관세가 부과됐지만
내년부터는 가격 부담이 사라지면서
수입 물량이 크게 늘어날 것으로 예상됩니다.
[올해 상반기 7천916톤 수입…지난 한 해보다 2배 이상]
실제 관세율이 9.5% 떨어진 올해의 경우
상반기에만 7천916톤이 수입되는 등
지난 한해 보다 갑절 이상 늘었습니다.

미국산 만다린은 가장 늦게 수확하는 감귤 '카라향'과 비슷합니다.

만다린을 일정기간 시장에서 격리해 출하시기의 조절을 요구했습니다.
또 행정당국과 농민단체, 생산농가가 참여하는
도정 차원의 대책기구를 조속히 구성해
실질적인 대책을 수립하고 정부 협상에 나서야 한다는 주장입니다.
