Island Investigations on Club Drugs Last month, a drug trafficking and distribution network involved in selling drugs such as Ecstasy and Ketamine in karaoke bars and foreigner-exclusive clubs in South (경상) Gyeongsang Province was apprehended by the Coast Guard. Amidst a series of drug crimes occurring in clubs and bars nationwide, a similar drug offender has been arrested in Jeju as well. A man in his 30s, identified as Mr. A, who was formerly affiliated with a club, has been arrested last month on suspicion of possessing dozens of Ecstasy pills and consuming them. Jeju District Prosecutor's Office has indicted Mr. A on charges of drug possession and consumption, and they have also announced that they are conducting supplementary investigations into individuals who were involved in drug consumption with him. Ecstasy, a new type of drug, is known as a "club drug" as it is primarily consumed by young people. It has a hallucinogenic effect that is three times stronger than that of methamphetamine. INTERVIEW Jo Gwang-won / Jeju Office, Korean Society of Drug Abuse Ecstasy is known to produce hallucinogenic effects that can induce a significant elevation in mood. It is indeed a drug that is commonly used by young people. The Jeju Provincial Police Agency has stated that this case is unrelated to clubs, and it is difficult to disclose specific details regarding the case, including the specific charges, as the investigation is still ongoing. According to the Korea Customs Service, the amount of newly identified drugs seized last year was 260 kg, which is more than a tenfold increase compared to two years ago. Among them, the quantity of Ecstasy seizures increased by seven times during the same period. With the recent arrest of an Ecstasy drug offender in Jeju, there is growing interest in whether the crimes are linked to related industries, as seen in nationwide cases, rather than being isolated incidents of individual crimes. The investigation results regarding any potential spread of crime to associated sectors have garnered significant attention. 제주에도 클럽 마약?…경찰 수사 확대 지난 달 경남에 있는 노래주점과 외국인 전용 클럽 등에서 엑스터시와 케타민 등 마약류를 판매한 판매책과 유통 조직이 해경에 검거됐습니다. 전국적으로 클럽이나 술집에서 마약 범죄가 잇따르는 가운데 제주에서도 유사 마약 사범이 검거됐습니다. 모 클럽 관계자였던 30대 A 씨가 지난 달 엑스터시 수십 정을 소지하고 투약한 혐의로 구속됐습니다. 제주지검은 A 씨를 마약류 소지와 투약 혐의로 구속 기소했고 함께 투약한 이들에 대해서도 보완 수사를 진행하고 있다고 밝혔습니다. 엑스터시는 필로폰보다 환각 작용이 3배나 큰 신종 마약류로 젊은 층이 주로 투약하면서 일명 클럽용 마약으로도 알려졌습니다. <인터뷰 : 고광언/ 한국마약범죄학회 제주지회장> 엑스터시를 투약하면 환각작용을 일으켜서 기분이 아주 상승되는 효과를 누리는 마약으로 알려지고 있습니다. 젊은 사람들이 많이 이용하는 마약으로 보면 되겠습니다. 제주경찰청은 이번 사건은 클럽과는 무관하다면서도 구체적인 혐의점 등은 수사가 진행 중이여서 밝히기 어렵다고 전했습니다. 지난해 관세청이 적발한 신종 마약류는 260kg으로 2년 전보다 10배 이상 급증했습니다. 이 가운데 엑스터시 적발 물량은 같은 기간 7배나 늘었습니다. 제주에서도 엑스터시 마약 사범이 검거된 가운데 개인의 단순 범죄가 아닌 전국 사례처럼 연관 업종으로 범죄가 퍼졌을지 수사 결과에 관심이 모아지고 있습니다.

  • Jeju Exports Top $300 Million for First Time
  • Jeju’s annual exports have surpassed 300 million dollars for the first time on record. According to Jeju Province, cumulative exports through last month reached 300.26 million dollars, up 84 percent from the same period last year. Exports in the past month alone totaled 40 million dollars, more than double year-on-year, marking 11 consecutive months of growth and placing Jeju among the top regions nationwide for export growth. This is because tariffs that have been gradually reduced under the Korea?U.S. Free Trade Agreement, which took effect in 2012, will be fully eliminated next year. [Slug] Tariff removal raises fears of import surge Until now, U.S. mandarins were subject to tariffs of up to 30 percent. From next year, however, the price burden will disappear, raising expectations of a sharp increase in import volumes. Todd Thacker, KCTV 미국산 감귤류 무관세 수입…농가 '비상' [내년부터 미국산 감귤류 '만다린' 무관세 수입] 내년부터 미국산 감귤류 만다린이 관세 없이 국내에 들어옵니다. 지난 2012년 발효된 한·미 자유무역협정에 따라 단계적으로 인하돼 온 관세가 내년 전면 철폐되기 때문입니다. [관세 사라지며 수입 물량 급증 우려] 지금까지 미국산 만다린에는 최대 30%의 관세가 부과됐지만 내년부터는 가격 부담이 사라지면서 수입 물량이 크게 늘어날 것으로 예상됩니다. [올해 상반기 7천916톤 수입…지난 한 해보다 2배 이상] 실제 관세율이 9.5% 떨어진 올해의 경우 상반기에만 7천916톤이 수입되는 등 지난 한해 보다 갑절 이상 늘었습니다. [만감류 '카라향'과 비슷…직격탄 우려] 미국산 만다린은 가장 늦게 수확하는 감귤 '카라향'과 비슷합니다. ["수입량 늘어나면 감귤산업 자체가 생존 위협"] 때문에 당장 내년부터 출하 시기가 비슷한 만감류에 직격탄이 우려됩니다. 이어 수입량이 늘어날 경우 제주의 감귤산업 생존 자체가 위협받을 수 있다며 농민들은 불안감을 감추지 못하고 있습니다.   • Jeju City Expands Support for Women Farmers
  • Jeju City will raise the upper age limit for special medical checkup support for women farmers from 70 to 80 starting next year. Accordingly, the annual number of eligible recipients will increase from 845 to 1,180. Beneficiaries pay only 20,000 won out of the total fee of 220,000 won and can receive examinations for five major health risks common with farmers, including musculoskeletal disorders, fracture risk, and cardiovascular diseases.

  • Jeju to Expand Honey Grading System
  • Based on the successful pilot program this year, Jeju City will fully implement institutional support for its honey grading system starting next year. This year, six local beekeeping farms and one processing facility participated, with a total of 34 drums of honey receiving official grading, laying the groundwork for the system. Beginning next year, Jeju City plans to introduce subsidies for inspection costs, encouraging the production of premium grade honey and participation from farmers. 제주시, 벌꿀 등급제 내년 본격화…인센티브 도입 제주시가 올해 벌꿀 등급제 시범 운영 성과를 바탕으로 내년부터 벌꿀 등급제의 조기 정착을 위한 제도 지원을 본격화합니다. 올해 도내 6개 양봉농가와 1개 소분장이 참여해 34드럼의 벌꿀이 등급 판정을 받으며 등급제 도입을 위한 초기 기반을 마련했습니다. 이를 바탕으로 제주시는 내년 등급제 참여 농가를 대상으로 검사비 지원과 등급별 생산장려금 지급 등 인센티브를 도입해 1+ 등급 벌꿀 생산을 확대하고 제도 초기 농가 참여를 적극 유도할 방침입니다.
