Manjanggul Lava Tube, which had been closed after a rockfall near its entrance in 2023, has reopened to the public after two years and five months.

Safety facilities have been installed around the rockfall site, and the cave interior has been upgraded with observation decks and safety railings.

A designated Natural Monument and UNESCO World Natural Heritage site, Manjanggul Lava Tube is renowned for its well-preserved formations and spectacular scenery.

Hundreds of thousands of people visit the site each year.

[Slug] Rockfall at cave entrance, closure in December 2023

However, the site was closed due to safety concerns in December 2023 after rocks fell from the upper section of the entrance.

Now, after more than two years, Manjanggul has officially reopened.

[Slug] Restoration project completed with KRW 12.1 billion investment

The Jeju World Heritage Headquarters carried out extensive restoration and safety upgrades with a budget of 12.1 billion won.

[Slug] Protective netting installed at rockfall site

Protective netting now covers the exact site of the rockfall to prevent further collapses.

[Slug] Steel safety structures added inside cave

Precautionary steel structures have been added about 700 meters inside the cave, an area where the risk of falling rocks is considered high.

[Slug] Decks and railings installed along 1-km section

Along a one-kilometer stretch of the cave interior, excluding the entrance, new observation decks and handrails offer visitors improved safety and convenience.

We improved the deck facilities to make them more comfortable, especially for elderly visitors and those with mobility challenges. Safety was our top priority, and after multiple rounds of expert consultations and design revisions, we completed the project and were able to reopen the site.

Officials determined the two 2023 rockfall incidents occurred near the entrance, an area particularly vulnerable to temperature fluctuations.

The World Heritage Headquarters says it will conduct regular safety inspections and continually monitor for potential rockfalls.

Because this is a naturally formed cave rather than a man-made structure, rockfalls can occur due to earthquakes or temperature changes. We conduct monitoring once every month and reinforce any areas identified as hazardous.

'낙석에 폐쇄' 만장굴 2년 5개월 만 재개방

용암동굴 형태와 지형이 잘 보존돼
비경을 선사하면서
해마다 수십 만 명이 이 곳을 찾습니다.

하지만 지난 2023년 12월,
만장굴 입구 상층부에서 낙석이 발생하면서
안전상의 이유 등으로 폐쇄됐습니다.

이런 가운데 한동안 폐쇄됐던 만장굴이
2년 5개월 만에 다시 문을 열었습니다.
