A long-established maternity clinic in Jeju City is set to shut down this August, fueling concerns over the region’s shrinking maternity care network. With only a few delivery hospitals remaining, concerns grow regarding the region’s future of maternal healthcare.

An obstetrics and gynecology clinic in Jeju City has decided to close its doors at the end of August.

The primary reason for the closure is a shortage of medical personnel.

As a maternity hospital, the clinic must maintain a 24-hour emergency response system.
However, it has become increasingly difficult to recruit specialists, making it impossible for the current medical staff to continue operations.
The hospital has been one of Jeju’s major maternity facilities, with more than 200 babies delivered there in the first quarter of this year alone.

Expectant mothers scheduled to give birth in the second half of the year are being transferred to other hospitals, but the process has not been easy.
There are only a few hospitals capable of handling deliveries, and some have already reached their patient capacity.

Currently, Jeju has 28 obstetrics and gynecology clinics.
However, the number of facilities capable of performing deliveries will drop from five to four beginning in September.
In particular, the Seogwipo region does not have a single obstetrics clinic that offers delivery services.

오는 8월을 마지막으로 폐원이 결정된 제주시내 한 산부인과.

30년 가까지 제주 산모들의 출산을 책임져 온 이 병원이
문을 닫게 된 가장 큰 이유는 의료 인력 부족입니다.
[분만 가능 전문의 부족…의료 인력난 심화]
분만 병원 특성상 24시간 응급 대응 체계를 유지해야 하지만
전문의를 구하기 어려워
현재 의료진만으로는 운영을 이어가기 힘든 상황에 이르렀습니다.
해당 병원은 올해 1분기에만
200여 명의 신생아가 태어난 도내 대표 분만 병원 가운데 하나.

폐원 결정에 올 하반기 출산 예정인 산모들은
다른 병원으로 전원 절차가 진행되고 있지만 상황은 녹록지 않습니다.
분만이 가능한 병원이 많지 않고
이미 일부 병원은
수용 인원이 포화 상태에 이르렀기 때문입니다.
현재 제주지역 산부인과는 모두 28곳.
이 가운데
분만이 가능한 의료 기관은
오는 9월부터 4곳으로 줄게 됩니다.
특히 서귀포 지역은
분만이 가능한 산부인과가 단 한곳도 없는 실정입니다.
지역 분만 의료 체계가 도마에 오르고 있습니다.
